The Vietnam War
Lesson Outline
Today we focused on the Vietnam War that raged from 1950 to 1975. Following WWII, French colonialism in Indochina was challenged by communist leader Ho Chi Minh. France left the region after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.The US supported the division of Vietnam at the 17th parallel and democratic South Vietnam. Both Kennedy and Johnson attempted to defeat communism in the region by sending US troops to fight North Vietnamese communist forces. The Tet Offensive of 1968 intensified anti-war protests. President Nixon implemented strategies such as "Vietnamization" (incursions into Cambodia and Laos) and the massive bombing campaigns. Eventually, the US and North Vietnam entered into the Paris Peace Accords, officially ending American involvement in the war. Without the assistance of the U.S., South Vietnam fell to North Vietnam on April 30, 1975. The North Vietnamese achieved victory and the war in Vietnam was officially finished.
