I. Beatrice, like Ruth, is trapped by a need to fit in. She talks about how popular she was in high school when in reality she was an outcast. She was teased which led to pain and withdrawal.
II. Tillie is secure in her self image. She quietly goes about following her pursuits as best she can, despite obstacles. She doesn't rely on others opinions of her and she does not let other's thoughts about her shape her thinking or her actions. She doesn't rely on how she looks, superficial, but has curiosity and interest in the world around her. This ultimately leads to her success in the science fair and the author suggests that it will help Tillie succeed in life. What do you think?

We spent 2 consecutive lessons during periods 3 and 4 on President John F. Kennedy today. Jaydn learned about his family, upbringing, education, his purple heart from his naval service in WWII, his years as a congressman and Senator from MA and his victory in the 1960 presidential election. At 43, JFK was the youngest person ever elected to the presidency and the first president born in the 20th century. He is also the only president to have won the Pulitzer Prize in writing for his book, "Profiles in Courage." We reviewed some of the foreign policy issues confronting JFK such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs. Domestically, JFK was a revered, respected leader. The experiences of his sister, Rosemarie, made Kennedy an advocate for more diversified learning and teaching programs in the U.S. He also started the Peace Corps. JFK was bound for re-election in 1964,but was shockingly and tragically assassinated as he rode in a motorcade, next to his wife on Nov. 21, 1961. Jaydn learned how VP Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into the presidency on the plane carrying the deceased JFK, Jacqueline Kennedy and RFK. Anyone who was alive when this event happened can recall exactly where they were and what they were doing when news of this tragic event went public. Even newscasters wept on live television.

Jaydn declined my call so I texted Miss Elise and she texted her mother. Jadyn then came to the session and then participated wholly in the lesson, reading the part of Tillie very well.
