I was going to have Lucas for Math from 12:30 - 1:30 today (2-17-22) but I left at 1:00. Laurie offers for me to start later and felt it didn't pay to go on for a short time. I had given her work and she was going to work with him herself. I only put in for the half hour I was there.
I screenshared "Musescore" and taught Lucas about lines and spaces of notated music and how it works. He is a quick learner, and played the notes on his keyboard.
We started reading a book in Spanish, where we practiced numbers and colors and learned new words like big (Grande), small (Pequeno), up
(Arriba), and down ( Abajo).
Lucas and I brainstormed different kinds of insects. He learned the characteristics of insects. Lucas enjoyed a cut and paste activity that involved labeling the body parts of an insect.
This morning, I read a passage to Lucas and asked him to pay careful attention to details as I was going to ask him questions based on the story. I selected a story about a bald eagle, as I knew this is one of Lucas's favorite animals, and I hoped it would engage, excite and educate him all at the same time. Lucas paid careful attention and answered both multiple choice and open-ended questions with accuracy, demonstrating excellent comprehension skills and the ability to synthesize and integrate information presented auditorily. If parts of a text don't make sense to Lucas, he uses strategies such as re-reading (or asking for it to be reread), predicting, and questioning in order to better understand it. We then read another story. I asked Lucas to read along by placing his finger underneath each word as I read the passage slowly. He followed all directives well and sustained attention throughout. He then chose words from a word bank that best fit in the blanks based on the text. Lucas did very well on this task as well. He makes good effort to decode words but becomes frustrated at times if he feels he is not meeting the (high) expectations he sets for himself. He is always encouraged for his effort and, to his credit, if he's re-directed, he will often come back to the task to meet the challenge and continue to work towards a more positive and successful outcome. Although we experienced a few technical difficulties during the session and attempts to trouble shoot them were unsuccessful, it is hoped that these will be satisfactorily resolved by the time of our next session.
Lucas is learning about his place within the world. We are starting with his home environment and expanding. Today he drew a map of his room, drew a picture of himself in the house, wrote the number of his house and wrote his street address. We went from his room to his house, to the street he lives on. Tomorrow we will talk about his community within the town and the town within the state.

Lucas enjoyed drawing a picture of his room. He took me to his room to show me that his map represented his room.
Characteristics of mammals, amphibians and reptiles were reviewed. Lucas did well on a cut and paste activity that involved sorting animal pictures into reptiles and not reptiles. Given a page of pictures of reptiles, Lucas enjoyed a game in which he acted out the movements of the reptiles and I tried to guess which one he was portraying.

I was asked to sub for Pat Tepas. Laurie had informed Elise that they would be coming online a little late. Laurie wanted to talk about Lucas taking breaks and that he was going to be online for the remainder of the year. She said she would read books she ordered with Lucas and see me later for science and social studies. I offered to do reading with him, but she declined my offer.
