Unit 7- Short fiction /longer synthesis /character/setting
Lesson Outline
As Joshua encountered interpretative difficulties with Welty's "The Worn Path" today I dissected the symbolism , metaphors , and allusions in this famous piece of short fiction. We focused on the protagonist, Phoenix , as a Christ- like figure , who perseveres the racism of the South in 1940 Mississippi and compared the resurrection of the mythical phoenix to Christ's resurrection after crucifixion. In this regard, I explained the significance of the thorn bush and the veiled image of Mary Magdellon washing Christ's feet as a woman kneels down to assist Phoenix tie her shoe.

energy and work
Lesson Outline
To determine the expansion of a gas under constant atmospheric pressure when a specific amount of energy is transferred as. heat from the surroundings. The calculation of work done is found by utilizing w=-P ( delta V). Once the work is calculated, the change in internal energy is calculated from delta U = q + w.

Unit 7- Short fiction /longer synthesis /character/setting
Lesson Outline
We completed our study of symbols and figurative language in short fiction today by reviewing AP MCQs on this area and my introducing our next reading,Welty's "The Worn Path." We discussed the use of metaphor and allusion in the title, in the main character's name, and in the opening paragraphs. As we studied the AP questions where Joshua had some questions , I provided strategies to interpret similes focusing on the function of the simile in the passage.

1st law of thermodynamics
Lesson Outline
Review the formula changes in energy content equals energy transferred as heat plus energy transferred as work. U = q+ w. Discuss how the energy of the universe is constant, conserved and must be accounted for. Elicit that U = internal energy, which is the sum of potential and kinetic energy. Work is determined by the formula W= -P + delta V, were V is the volume of a gas and P is the pressure. Work is in Joules, pressure in Pascals, and volume change om M^3. Start solving problem on page 269, check your understanding.

Theory of Integrals
Lesson Outline
We will use the limit of a sum to define the definite integral. We will define the term Riemann Sum, you can use it to find values for definite integrals. The theory is important as it is leading up to the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus which equates the definite integral to the area between a continuous curve and the x-axis.

Lesson Comments
The theory is important, but it also takes time to grasp. As we use the Fundamental Theorem to do example problem it will make more sense. Right now it is a work in progress.

Unit 7- Short fiction /longer synthesis /character/setting
Lesson Outline
We continued our examination of the function of symbols and figurative language. I emphasized the importance of focusing on the items or things compared in a simile or metaphor as a means of interpretation, noting how metaphors compare two unlike objects while symbols often represent abstractions. We then studied some sample AP MCQs on this area and discussed how the AP exam tests student understanding of symbolism. I addressed specific sample questions where Joshua had difficulties and explained strategies to find the best answer even if his (or my) interpretations of a symbol differ from the available choices.
