Discuss how work done on a system or by a system affects the emerge of the system. Discuss how work done on the surroundings causes energy to be expended . Use example of work done during sublimation of dry ice which requires to be transferred as heat to the system from the surrounding. Discuss why energy balance exists. Introduce the formula u=q + w and define all terms. This represents a mathematical statement of Newton's first law of thermodynamics.
Discuss why a large truck takes longer to stop than a small car, both traveling at the same speed. Introduce the concept of momentum as inertial in motion. Inertia involves mass and velocity. momentum can be mathematically designated as mass x velocity. Discuss what changes in mass and /or velocity will cause a change in momentum. Show he progression from force to change in velocity to change in acceleration, ending in a change in momentum (impulse). Discuss the two factors involved in impulse and momentum change, force and time. Elicit how force x time + impulse and an impulse is a change in momentum (delta) mv. Derive how ft=delta mv.
Unit 7- Short fiction /longer synthesis /character/setting
Lesson Outline
In preparation for analyzing our next piece of short fiction, "The Worn Path", today I provided instruction on the myopic narrative voice, symbolism, setting as symbolism, and archetypal settings that are commonly associated with abstractions as illustrated in Great Expectations and The Great Gatsby. We also discussed stories and longer pieces of fiction we have studied that highlight these areas, specifically symbols in "The Cathedral " and in Amy Tan's "Two Kinds."
