non metal oxides
Lesson Outline
Elicit how carbon dioxide and sulfur trioxide will form acidic solutions without hydrogen atom present in the formula. Show how carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid in a two step process, and discuss the Ka of each step. Outline carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide and nitrogen dioxide as acidic oxides.
Discuss and outline how metal oxides such as calcium oxide are base oxides forming a metal oxide base such as calcium hydroxide when dissolved in water,

Lesson Outline
Today we parsed and paraphrased Gray's "Elegy " as I have been working with Joshua on analysis methods to interpret poetry, one being to paraphrase. Stanza by stanza I assisted Joshua in reorganizing structure and vocabulary to in effect "translate" as an initial step to interpretation. As we worked through this lengthy and at times abstruse poem, we further focused on recognizing the poetic techniques of apostrophe, alliteration, and personification as well as exploring their function in the poem.

Differentiation
Lesson Outline
We will do example problems involving finding derivatives. The problems will emphasize the use of the product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. We will also look at the process of implicit differentiation which will use all of the rules for derivatives that we have studied to this point.

Lesson Comments
We completed the lesson outline. Josh responded very nicely to the questions asked and was able to contribute to the solutions of the problem examples completed in class. I am very pleased with his progress. It is a real pleasure to work with Josh.

Unit 2- Poetry /characterization/ structure
Lesson Outline
I first reviewed the steps or method to follow when interpreting a poem. We then discussed Donne's Sonnet 14 ,and the poet's use of stark juxtaposition to convey the speaker's desperate plea to God to free him from temptation. We noted also the use of poetic "apostrophe" and metaphor. Next, we continued our study of Gray's "Elegy" ,specifically focusing on the shifts of focus during the poem evidenced by the use of imagery. We further discussed the identity of the speaker and poem's general subject matter, death's inevitability to rich and poor alike.

acids
Lesson Outline
Discuss amphiprotic acids. Use examples to explain how they can be classed as either an acid or a base determined by the proton movement. Write net ionic equations to show phosphoric acid behaves as an amphiprotic molecule. Introduce oxides and non metals and write an equation to demonstrate how carbon dioxide undergoes two ionic reactions when presenting with acid properties

Lesson Outline
Discuss dissociation constant for acids and how to determine if an acid is a strong acid or a weak acid based on the dissociation constant. Discuss how ammonia acts as a base without an OH ion being in the formula. Compare dissociation constants of strong acids with weak . Explain diprotic acids and examine both dissociation constants.

Limits Review
Lesson Outline
We will review the AP Test style of limit problems on pages 120-1 in the textbook. The problems model the AP test and were assigned last week. We will discuss the problems that Joshua had questions on to clear up any issues on limits. Since limits are a basis for derivatives and integrals it is important to be sure that we can move forward with a solid knowledge of limits.

Lesson Outline
We studied Gray's "Elegy in a Churchyard" and a sonnet by Shakespeare during today's session. Regarding the elegy, I first provided some definitions to archaic words and next discussed how to identify the speaker. We will continue to study structure next week. Next, we studied a Shakespeare sonnet. Joshua identified the major poetic techniques-alliteration and metaphor. I provided a definition of anaphora and explained its function . We then discussed the 3 metaphors that drive the sonnet's meaning, noting the two line couplet that resolves the question raised in the first three quatrains.
