Topic 2 Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships
Lesson Outline
We learned that in mathematics, a rate is the ratio between two related quantities. In describing the units of a rate, the word "per" is used to separate the units of the two measurements used to calculate the rate (for example a heart rate is expressed "beats per minute"). When rates are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as 2 feet per second or 5 miles per hour, they are called unit rates. If you have a multiple-unit rate such as 120 students for every 3 buses, and want to find the single-unit rate, write a ratio equal to the multiple-unit rate with 1 as the second term. Next we solved several word problems requiring us to find the unit rate.
Topic 2 Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships
Lesson Outline
2-4 Describe Proportional Relationships – We learned to find the constant of proportionality in a proportional relationship y = kx where k is the constant. Then we learned to write and use equations that represent situations involving proportional quantities. Next we practiced multiplication in the thousandths.
Topic 2 Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships
Lesson Outline
2-1 Connect Ratios, Rates, and Unit Rates – We learned how to recognize and represent proportional relationships and use them to solve problems. We learned that a rate is a type of ratio that has both terms expressed in different units.
Mid-Topic Performance Task – We discovered that many real-world problem situations can be represented with a mathematical model, but that model may not represent a real-world situation exactly.
In this activity, Noelle focused on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers. She also used theses basic operations with one-digit decimals.
In this activity, Noelle continued to work with percentages. The exercise had her solving word problems that involved evaluating percentages of various quantities.
In this activity, Noelle focused on an exercise that added and subtracted large 6 and 4 digit numbers. These problems have helped Noelle develop a much improved number sense. She finished the session again multiplying 5 and 3-digit decimals. She is showing real progress.
