Lesson Comments
Only spent 30 minutes with Cabo. Had a couple of phone conversations with Nicole, and there were technical issues getting the Arduino software installed.
Had Cabo talk a bit about the projects he's worked on this semester. He mentioned a "Mosquitto Death Star" and a joystick-controlled RGB LED. Informally assessed his knowledge of foundational CS concepts like variables, constants, functions, loops, and conditionals. Proposed implementing a digital speed limit sign as the first project.
Cabo was taught today about responsive web design.
He learned about the tags, properties, page layout and other factors that should be considered when creating a responsive webpage.
We discussed width, max-width, viewport width, discrete image selection in relation to viewport width, the vw unit, and mediaqueries for adaptive arrangement.
Cabo was shown actual coded pages and asked to interpret the code and make predictions based on changes that we made to the code.
This afternoon, Cabo explained his strategy when using a simulator to recreate the Roman Empire, and choosing the country of Italy engaged in a "Conflict of Nations" challenge. The objective is to protect one’s country from its enemies and to conquer as much territory as you can before the enemy does, using strategies that involve achieving economic efficiency and technological superiority over other nations. One additionally has to skillfully manage the economy, armed forces, and conduct scientific research to expand one's army. Forming strong alliances and coalitions is also an integral part of the objective. The conversation lead to a discussion of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Cabo shared his opinion that Putin's aim is world domination and that Russia's invasion has the potential to set up a clash of nuclear war powers. We ended our class engaged in a bit of a debate about whether or not art imitates life.
