Great class, Atticus listens well and is getting into the flow of the Batt school curriculum.
Atticus and I reviewed key events from the story ‘Out of My Mind’ before finishing chapter 5. Our focus while reading was reading punctuation and noting information about Melody’s school. After reading, we compared Melody’s student experience with a typical student’s experience.
Today, Atticus continued working on the Mid-Topic Checkpoint to assess his understanding of the material taught so far. Fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with decimals as well as multiplying fractions were all covered. Using critical thinking skills to apply these skills to real-world situations was a major focus. Atticus was focused and eager to complete the quiz, reflecting his 96% score. We were both very proud of his work.
After clarifying certain plot elements for Atticus, we engaged in a discussion on literary theme. We noted the difference between reading for entertainment and reading for pleasure . I then charted on the board how theme and character development are related. Atticus discussed Claudia's character at the beginning of the novel and her desire to feel unique and important by discovering the provenance of the angel statue. We addressed whether human value can only be derived from heroic acts or important discoveries and how a realization of inherent worth can serve as theme of the novel and an end point of Claudia's develpment.
Today, Atticus and I continued learning about the cell. We reviewed what we learned yesterday (unicellular/multicellular, prokaryotes/eukaryotes, organelles, cell membrane, semipermeable, homeostasis). We continued watching the Amoeba Sisters video on the cell. He took notes on the following organelles: cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, ribosomes. We discussed the functions of each.
Today's lesson focused on the parts of a map. Atticus participated in group activities that detailed how to read a map. He answered questions that tested his understanding of latitude and longitude.
