Life Science - Sustainability/Climage Change
Lesson Outline
Today, Atticus and I continued discussing sustainability in the context of climate change and global warming. We read through chapter two of our "The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming." We paused after each paragraph and took notes on the key terms and processes: greenhouse gases, short-wave energy, and long-wave energy. We colored coded our diagram in our notes. We listed several examples of greenhouse gases and discussed the process of sunlight being absorbed by the Earth/bodies of water and radiating that energy back into the atmosphere to be absorbed by greenhouse gases. We discussed that even though the global temperature has risen by 1 degree over the last 100 years and that doesn't seem like a lot, 1 degree can mean a lot of changes take place that may be irreversible. Additionally, the global temperature is still rising every year.

We explored the definition and elements of character focusing on the main character,Claudia. Looking at the text, we discussed why Claudia does not feel "important" and whether her circumstances justify her feeling of inadequacy.Further, we addressed Atticus' study guide homework, stressing the need to carefully read the question before answering and the importance of using proper spelling. Atticus then did well in revising his homework answers.

Life Science - Climate Change
Lesson Outline
Today, Atticus and I continued our discussion about sustainability which we began with our study of the importance of pollinators. Today's lesson introduced climate change and global warming. We read the introductory chapter of a book on global warming and took notes. We discussed that global warming is when the sun's energy gets trapped in the Earth's atmosphere, causing the atmosphere to heat up too much. We discussed that carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels causes this problem. We discussed and notated the negative effects of global warming. We ended with watching a short National Geographic video summarizing what global warming is, how it's caused, what the effects are, and things we can do to decrease it.
