As Atticus continues to have some difficulty addressing the study guide questions, I again directed his attention to specific pages in the text to enable him to complete the homework. We then discussed how a critical event in the plot , the murder of Salva's uncle by the North Sudanese army, impacted Salva and the way he is thereafter treated by the group traveling to an Ethiopian refugee camp. In order to highlight the main character's plight , we then looked at photographs of Ethiopian refugee camps and noted the similarities between the photos and the novel's setting. Last, Atticus rewrote some of the plot events from last night's reading into a first person point of view of Salva. We discussed the benefits and limitations of a first person point of view as compared a third person point of view and concluded the first person point of view has greater emotional impact on the reader because the reader feels closer to the narrator.
Atticus continued to work with percents and how to write equations to find percents, parts, and wholes. Together, we completed examples of finding the missing part when given the percentage of a whole, finding the missing percent when given the part of a whole, and finding the whole when given the percent and part. For each example, Atticus substituted values into a multiplication equation and used inverse operations to find the unknown. Similar practice problems were assigned for homework.
Atticus read about how oases are formed. We reviewed how water flows into and through an aquifer. He explored an PhET interactive simulation on glaciers. He manipulated snowfall and temperature to see how glacier formation is affected. He answered the follow-up questions.
Atticus read, discussed, and took notes in his interactive notebook about the caste system of India. He watched a video about Siddhartha Gautama's life and how he became "Buddha."

Atticus read about the scientist career of a river keeper. We discussed that a river keeper uses instruments to monitor the health of a river. He read about aquifers and water storage. We observed a diagram of an aquifer and he drew arrows showing the direction of water flow.
