Based on our prior class discussion and study guide work we today completed and discussed a literary glossary of the following: plot, setting, conflict, and irony. With respect to conflict, I specified the types of external and internal conflicts that characterize many literary works and Atticus did very well in citing textual examples of these conflicts. We then studied the text and discussed Maria's statements that illustrate her external conflict with the prevailing Nazi society. Last, we reviewed Atticus' homework and focused on ways to provide specific answers to study guide questions instead of relying on generalizations .
Atticus read pages 22-36 in ‘The Book Thief’ after a review of the prologue and introduction. We noticed and discussed foreshadowed events and the new key characters, Rosa and Hans, Liesel's foster parents. We also discussed the difference between inferences and assumptions.
Atticus finished answering the states of matter lab follow-up questions. He read about potential energy and kinetic energy. We reviewed a chart of kinetic and potential energy.
Atticus began with a quick online review of understanding integers and their opposites before we applied our recent ratio lessons to converting customary units. Atticus used dimensional analysis to convert measures by including measurement units and multiplying by a conversion factor. He used this method to convert customary units of length, capacity, and weight. For homework, Atticus was assigned the lesson's practice and problem questions.
Atticus participated in a jump rope activity. His goal was to complete 57 consecutive jumps. After many attempts Atticus stayed confident, focused, positive, and made minor adjustments. He crushed his goal by successfully completing 89 jumps.
Atticus took his Chapter test and made a !00%. We began a new unit of study on Ancient Greeks. We discussed new vocabulary words for this chapter. He worked on locating countries that border with Israel.
