Atticus and I reviewed and corrected this weekend's homework assignment on exponents which involved evaluating expressions and writing exponents in exponential, expanded, and standard forms. Then, he completed the unit readiness assessment, scoring 80%. Today's lesson focused on understanding equations and determining if equations' solutions make them true. Atticus completed problems by substituting given values for variables and evaluating them. He was assigned the lesson's practice and problems-solving questions for homework.
Atticus began class with a 7-minute jog around the perimeter of the playground. Next, he participated in a jump rope activity and achieved 30 consecutive jumps during his first attempt. Atticus was able to surpass his goal of 50 by completing 51 jumps. Lastly, Atticus partook is a fun, competitive game of badminton.
As our next novel is drawn from the fictional fantasy genre, I introduced the unit by an open discussion on things we wish we could see or do such as meeting an historical figure. Atticus wished he could have gills and lungs so he could swim deep underwater. We then discussed how fantasy fiction can be both a form of escapism and a source of learning something new about ourselves. I next introduced the setting and characters of the novel. Last, we addressed Atticus' homework as he encountered difficulty summarizing the material on the Iroquois . We worked on locating the major points in the material and organizing them into a summary. Attticus then completed his written work .
Life Science - Obtaining Energy and Removing Waste

Today, we continued learning about the digestive system. We read about how we need to consume food to get energy to power our bodies and the activities that our bodies perform. We filled in a chart listing some activities that use energy, wrote a description of what body systems are used in that activity, and ranked the energy level required for that activity on a scale of 1-3 with 1 being the most energy required and 3 being the least energy required.

Atticus completed his crossword unit review. He demonstrated his ability to read a map and answer comprehension questions about the map. He decided to write his report for Wednesday on the Phoenicians' navigational contribution to society.
Atticus began the next unit on representing and solving equations and inequalities. He completed the 'Review What You Know' on vocabulary terms, determining whether equations were true, evaluating expressions with values for variables, using the order of operations to evaluate expressions, and graphing in the coordinate plane. Then, Atticus began the unit readiness assessment and was assigned the remaining 4 problems for homework.
We concluded our lessons on the literary essay by first reviewing Atticus ' work from last week and then addressing the purpose of a conclusion. I discussed using the essay topic as a foundation for formulating a final paragraph that comments on the thesis ,in this case, Dickens as a social reformer. We discussed how Dickens' message remains resonant because of his skills as a story teller. I then helped Atticus work through a final paragraph that comments on how Scrooge's redemption can be viewed as a call for societal redemption and social change. We then reviewed Atticus' homework writing summarizing biographical information about the author of our next novel, "Indian in the Cupboard." We added a few salient facts and began to read through tonight's homework , reading a one page discussion on the Iroquois . I discussed how to formulate a topic sentence to be used in summarizing this material.
