Atticus arrived at school late this morning because of an appointment. We used our limited time to discuss the summer homework packet that he was given.
This morning, Atticus reviewed how to solve one-step equations. He worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations with positive and negative whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. He was reminded to use the properties of equality and show all of his work. We finished with multiplying by the reciprocal equations which we will practice a little more tomorrow.
Atticus began class with an activity of his choice. He chose block building. Next, Atticus participated in a fun, high-energy game of speed walking tag with his teacher.
Today's session focused on sentence writing, the novel's structure, and drawing inferences from the text. As the final chapter of the novel abandons the dual plot structure that characterized all of the prior chapters, we examined inferences that the reader can draw from this structure. Atticus noted that the dual plot line structure is obviated because the timelines of the two characters intertwine in the final chapter. We further thematically noted that Salva's metaphorical walk is completed by the final chapter allowing the author to use the final chapter to conclude Nya's journey. Next, we discussed how the drilling of water wells alters Sudanese society by removing sources of conflict. Atticus then completed study guide questions based on our class discussion. We further amplified or modified some of the study guide answers he had completed as homework.
