We continued the essay writing exercise on "A Christmas Carol" by discussing how to end the opening paragraph by introducing the main character's moral development as evidence of the story as a vehicle to induce social reform. I then provided additional instruction about the function of an essay : to assert a position and to support it by textual evidence. After we discussed various aspects of the text as possible evidence of Dickens' intention, Atticus noted them in outline form and then began transforming his ideas into sentences to include in the second paragraph. We looked at a list of transition words that could be used to join these sentences. By the end of the session, we had completed both the introduction to the essay and most of the supporting second paragraph.

Atticus is enjoying the variety in his workout, keep it going.
Atticus used class time to work on a drawing he wanted to make on Procreate, digital drawing software. He worked on controlling his pen and tracing his character. We then focused on using the soft airbrush to blend colors.
Atticus worked today on attempting to create his first pot up to step 5. He worked on coning, flattening, opening and reworking the clay back into a cylinder. We still worked on not adding too much water and applying the right amount of pressure.
Today, Atticus and I read about joints and ligaments. He underlined the vocab words and definitions in his workbook, then wrote and illustrated the words and definitions in his science notebook. We observed diagrams of three different types of body joints: ball and socket, hinge and pivot. We read about how each type of joint moves and where it is located in the human body.
We began working from the John Thompson book Teaching Little Fingers to play. We discussed the basics of standard musical notation and worked on reading and playing the notes A through G around the middle C position. We worked on hand placement and finger technique.
We completed our discussion of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" by discussing and my then outlining on the board specific instances of Scrooge's societal and individual redemption. I then distributed a 3 paragraph essay writing exercise based on the story. We studied the instructions and the structure of an essay. After reading the prompt, I discussed how to form a topic sentence that addresses the prompt and Atticus worked on drafting a topic sentence. We broadened the scope of the sentence, and then I explained how to compose the rest of an introductory paragraph by introducing the arguments the essay will advance . I assisted Atticus in preparing the remainder of the paragraph. We will continue, and hopefully complete, the writing excercise early next week.
