Atticus and I reviewed last night's homework, a quiz on simplifying algebraic expressions. He simplified expressions, matched equivalent expressions together, and determined the correct property of operations. Atticus scored an 85% and earned 5 points extra credit from yesterday's quiz review. Then, he began the unit test which will be continued on Monday. For homework, Atticus can choose any 10 problems from the review problems assigned.
Today, we focused on completing and reviewing the material on simplifying algebraic expressions. Atticus used the properties of operations to combine like terms and simplify given expressions. He answered the lesson's problem-solving questions and finished with the correlating quick review to prepare for the lesson's quiz and upcoming unit test. Atticus was assigned the lesson's 5-question quiz for homework.
Mesopotamia Vocabulary Words Phoenicians Unit Test Map Skills
Lesson Outline
Atticus took his test and made a 90. We began our new unit on the Phoenicians by exploring their alphabet and completing a survey called "About Me." He had to fill out a questionnaire about himself and then write it again using the Phoenician alphabet. We explored the new vocabulary for this unit. We located on the map where the ancient Phoenician towns would have been located. He discovered that the area is known today as Lebanon.
Today, Atticus wrote a claim in his workbook about what body systems work together to provide structure and support. He read about what supports a body and enables it to move. He read the key term, muscle, underlined it, added it to his science notebook, and illustrated it. We observed a diagram illustrating a relaxed muscle and contracted muscle. He wrote an explanation explaining how other systems help the body move.
We played some half scales on the piano, and continued working on playing the melody to Giorno's Theme in the key of B minor. We introduced some chords on the left hand to support the melody.
Mesopotamia Review for Chapter Test Vocabulary Words Comprehension Questions
Lesson Outline
We reviewed his vocabulary words and their meanings. We explored the major concepts of this Chapter on Mesopotamia. Atticus has a solid understanding of the material covered. We delved into the class system that made up the Sumerian Hierarchy. We watched a video on Ancient Mesopotamian daily life.
Today, Atticus and I began our next unit of study, Structure and Support. We explored the question, "Is muscle alive?" Atticus read four students' opinions about whether muscles are alive. He circled which student he agreed with and wrote a response explaining why he agreed with that student. He then observed a picture of a girl doing a handstand and brainstormed why she is able to do this. We then performed activities that involve voluntary and involuntary muscles, and Atticus recorded his ideas about whether or not the muscles involved required us to think in order to use them.
As we have completed reading the story, we today focused on what events most influenced Scrooge's redemption. We concluded that the Ghost of Christmas Future's pointing to Scrooge's tombstone had the most impact on Scrooge followed by the death of Tiny Tim. We then looked at Atticus' journal entries from last night's homework and examined how to locate more meaningful portions of the text as well as how to better explain the selected textual passages. Last, we began to discuss the events of the final pages with an aim of locating examples of both Scrooge's commitment to societal redemption as well as examples of his individual redemption. We will work on this further tomorrow as it will be the topic of an essay we will write in class next week.

Lesson Comments
We had abbreviated time in class today due to the parent conference.
Atticus and I reviewed his homework questions on generating equivalent fractions. He completed a table by inserting the given values for variables and determining the equivalent expressions, determined whether two expressions were equal, and used the properties of operations to complete equivalent expressions. Then, we continued our current lesson on simplifying algebraic expressions by combining like terms. Atticus was assigned the lesson's correlating practice and problem-solving problems for homework and will take the lesson's quiz tomorrow.
