Life Science - 6 Characteristics of Living Things Project
Lesson Outline
Today, we began working on our final project on the 6 characteristics of living things. We reviewed the requirements for the project, which will be a hand-drawn book of information and illustrations on the characteristics, and an oral presentation of the material. Atticus completed the title page, growth and development page, and began the use of energy page.
Atticus completed a Venn diagram comparing numeric expressions with algebraic expressions. He used lesson vocabulary in cloze sentences and found the perimeter and area of 6 figures.
Today, Atticus used the one-point perspective method to create the floor of his interior space. He worked on adding five horizontal and five vertical lines to create a checkered pattern floor. He then practiced using the fill tool to fill in the floor with the colors of his choice.
Introduction to one-point perspective drawing. Atticus and I went over the next project that he will be working on. We then used Procreate the digital drawing software to start his drawing. Using the grid, Atticus marked out the center point and the horizon. He then drew a line using the snap tool to each of the corners of the drawing board from the center point. He then used the rectangle tool to create a "back wall" for his interior space.
Today, Atticus and I discussed another one of the 6 characteristics of living things: maintaining internal conditions (homeostasis). In our workbook, he recorded his definition of homeostasis, and examples of processes the human body uses to maintain homeostasis. We viewed an Amoeba Sisters video of homeostasis, at the end discussing the following main points: definition of homeostasis, endotherm/ectotherm, negative feedback. I explained that next week we will begin a final project on the 6 characteristics of living things.
Atticus began by checking his answers from the unit 1 and 2 cumulative review questions that he completed last night. Then, Atticus continued working on the same review but rushed through the problems, did not show his work, and after 4 problems said that he had done enough. These missed questions do not accurately reflect his abilities and we discussed him having a better attitude and trying harder. He was assigned the remainder of the cumulative review for homework over the weekend.
