Today, Atticus prepared for tomorrow's unit test on integers and rational numbers, answering unit review questions that will be similar to the test questions. Integers, opposites, absolute values, graphing ordered pairs, representing rational numbers on a number line and a coordinate plane, and finding distance were all covered. While working together, Atticus appears to be prepared for the test and if he takes his time, should do well.
Today, Atticus and I continued studying our topic, which is the 6 characteristics of living things. We discussed the characteristic, reproduction. We viewed an Amoeba Sisters video on asexual and sexual reproduction. We discussed and notated in our workbook the definitions of each term. Asexual reproduction involves 1 individual creating clones of itself. Sexual reproduction involves 2 individuals creating offspring that are genetically different.
In conjunction with reviewing Atticus' revised homework , I explained how to write a summary of events in the novel and how to respond to questions seeking the experiences of a character. Atticus then took a short quiz on chapters 7-9.During the second segment of the session, we continued to work on Atticus' essay. After reviewing our outline, Atticus did very well in completing the essay by using clear specific language and textual examples followed by a thoughtful conclusion on the need for freedom of choice in a society.
We began our session with a review of previous events in ’Out of My Mind.’ Atticus then read chapters 9-10 with a focus on noticing the mood of the story. We also looked for confirmation of his previous predictions and made some new ones.
We began working on basic piano technique. We talked about hand position, finger placement, note/key locations, and introduced a basic finger exercise.
Continuing our essay writing progression, we reviewed the steps to prepare an essay and placed the essay outline on the board. I then discussed how to elaborate on the outline's examples by discussing the consequences of the examples. In this regard, I reiterated the proper use of transitional phrases and words like " as a result, therefore ,and consequently." Atticus then finished his introduction and worked on drafting a second paragraph that detailed the absence of freedom of choice in a dystopian community. We last reviewed Atticus' study guide answers and discussed where and why revisions were necessary in order to conform with the textual meaning of the novel.
Atticus self-checked last night's homework, making corrections where needed, finding the absolute value, ordering absolute values, and writing the ordered pairs for given points. He also completed the unit's vocabulary review. Then, we continued yesterday's lesson on representing polygons on a coordinate plane and finding their side lengths to find perimeters. Atticus was assigned the lesson's correlating quick quiz for homework.
Atticus began class with a jump rope activity. His goal was to complete 30 consecutive jumps. He came very close to his goal and achieved 25 jumps. Next, Atticus learned the rules of bocce ball and participated in a competitive game. Lastly, he partook in a game of ping pong. The period concluded with a review of the class.
