Today, we learned about a day in the life of a microbiologist. We brainstormed what kinds of technology a microbiologist might use on the job and what organisms they might study. We read an article called, "A Day in the Life of a Microbiologist." We discussed how microbiology is related to health care, ecology, and food and consumer safety.
Atticus started off class working in his sketchbook. He and I worked on a step-by-step sketch using PrismaColor pencils. We worked on using various different shades of colors to blend the pencils. We worked on blending different greens, blues and browns. He then chose the skin tone for his drawing and layed down a layer of PrismaColor on his self-portrait.
Atticus and I started off class by studying Frida Khalo and Picasso self-portraits and portraits. We discussed how they used color and what we think those colors are trying to convey. Using a photo reference, Atticus started his self-portrait by printing out his image and using carbon paper to transfer it onto the drawing paper.
Atticus started off with a daily sketch. We then finished his sugar skull and set it to dry. Afterwards, we went over the next project that we will work on in class. We did a lesson on self-portraits and talked about the vocabulary we will use in the unit.
This morning, Atticus and I reviewed his homework that was assigned last Friday. He completed 10 review problems on adding and subtracting decimals, whole number multiplication and division, and finding perimeter. Each problem contained careless mistakes and Atticus was advised to set up his problems correctly and take his time with basic arithmetic. Then, we reviewed Tuesday night's homework on applying the absolute value concept to real-world problems. He did very well with these questions. Finally, Atticus and I completed a mid-chapter review together and he was assigned a mid-chapter quiz for homework.
During the first segment of the session, Atticus completed a test on Chapters 1-5. We then reviewed his work and addressed spelling issues . I further suggested that he elaborate on some of his responses which he effectively did . We then discussed the career assignments Jonas' friends received at the Ceremony of the Twelves . We speculated as to what job the Elders might assign to Atticus in a dystopian society!
Atticus started off class with his daily sketch, he chose the prompt “8 things that I love”. Afterwards, we continued to paint his design on his Sugar Skull. We focused on using the proper amount of paint to make accurate lines and marks.
Today, we wrote a short diary entry from the point of view of Anton van Leeuwenhoek (one of the first microscope scientists), describing the excitement of seeing living things in a water drop. We then researched and made a timeline of discoveries related to the study of cells.
