There are causes & effects regarding all wars. World War I has four main causes that we reviewed today: 1) Alliances - When countries entered into agreements with other countries to protect military, political, or economic interests. The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance were the two sides fighting World War I.
2) Nationalism - As Europe was redefining boundaries for Germany, Italy, and the Balkans, most Europeans were feeling an increased pride and connection to their nation. However, nationalism also contributed to competition, hostility, and conflict among countries. 3) Militarism - There was a large growth in spending on armies, weapons, and recruitment of troops. Europe engaged in an arms race spurred on by nationalism and alliances. While Germany had the strongest army, Britain had the strongest navy. Russia had neither, but it had the most soldiers. And sadly, the leaders of Germany, Britain and Russia were all cousins!!!!
4) Imperialism - Not only were European powers competing for power in Europe, but they also wanted military, political, and economic power abroad. Conflicts in Asia and Africa contributed to tensions among Europeans at home.
