The NEWS within Sports
Lesson Outline
Finish the NEWS story which led the Newscast re: Top Golf Building next to exclusive Bears Club. Cameron was live with the lead story at the top of the newscast and the controversy was also the lead story in sportscast (can assume viewers saw top so recap and bring fresh angle in sports) Cam interviews Top Golf CEO then before he runs out of time within his 3:30 sportscast he mentions NHL's Florida Panthers historic upset over the Boston Bruins & next round playoffs beginning tonight in Toronto. And so he knows what real life sportscaster deal with, he planned on using a funny sound bite of the Panthers but the show producer cut his time / sportscast short so she a) mistimed the whole newscast and sports pays the price & b) she has time to air the "kicker" story at the end of the newscast about kittens. This is a regular and often infuriating occurrence.

U.S. Open History
Lesson Outline
The first U.S. Open was played in Rhode Island in 1895. The tournament was dominated by Scottish and British players until the first American won in 1911 and the title has been won mostly by players from the US since that year. From 1942 - 1945, the U.S. Open was cancelled due to WWII. In 1925, 1929 and 1930, the U.S. Open was won by a golfer Cameron really admires. Bobby Jones was an amateur golfer who was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport. History also describes him as a golf prodigy. He toured the U.S. during World War I from 1917 to 1918, playing exhibition matches before large crowds to generate income for war relief. Interestingly, Jones didn't pursue golf as a career. He worked on his education, attending Georgia Tech, Harvard and Emory and got a law degree. He was also a very astute and successful businessman. His accomplishments are too numerous to write here!

End of Year Assessments coming next week. Assessments to be conducted: CORE Reading Maze Comprehension, CORE Vocabulary Screening, San Diego Quick Assessment of Readability. If any of these are low (intensive instruction necessary) I will also conduct the CORE Phonics Survey. Cameron has improved his reading fluency and comprehension skills significantly over the course of the year. ReadTheory alone indicates growth from a 640L to an 850L for readability/reading comprehension.
