Topic 8 Solve Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume
Lesson Outline
Topic 8-4 Find Volume of Spheres – We learned to recognize the relationship between the volume of a cone and the volume of a sphere. Then we practiced finding the volume of a sphere given the surface area. We understand how to find the volume of a composite figure.
Ben read lesson 3 in the textbook about the US in the late 20th Century. We discussed Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush. We also started an in-class assignment.
Topic 8 Solve Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume
Lesson Outline
Topic 8-4 Find Volume of Spheres – We learned that the volume of a sphere is the same as twice the volume of a cone that has a base diameter and height that is the same as the sphere diameter.
We first completed a textual support exercise wherein I placed on the board a literary definition of "Naturalism" and Ben identified textual passages that exemplified the genre. Next, we discussed the societal reaction to Kino's finding the pearl noting how each person- from the priest to the town beggar- sees Kino's good fortune as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement. We last discussed the narrator's observation that human beings are "superior' because they have "the talent" of never being satisfied . We observed the narrator's tone was perhaps facetious given the novella is a parable illustrating how wealth can destroy a person's life. While recognizing the moral tone of the book, Ben nevertheless offered a number of interesting insights noting how greed can act as a motivation and perhaps is a "talent."

Ben read about the three ways to increase the magnetic field strength around an electromagnet: increase the number of coils, decrease distance from the coils, and increase voltage through the coils. He read about how to create an electromagnet and analyzed the step-by-step diagram. He diagrammed the three ways to increase electromagnet field strength in the 3-Dimensional Thinking. He completed Collect Evidence A. He completed the lab "Electromagnet Challenge" which experimented with making an electromagnet and changing its strength. He recorded his data and answered the follow-up questions. He completed 3-Dimensional Thinking on page 246.
We explored how Kino imagines his life will be after he finds the perfect pearl . I noted that like the mirage and dream imagery throughout chapter 2 ,Kino's dream is also an illusion. We identified foreshadowing and other references suggesting that ironically Kino's life will not be enhanced by wealth but will be destroyed. We also explored the questionable morality of one acquiring too much wealth in terms of the plot of the novel and also in today's society.Ben further discussed the contradictory role of religion and magic in Juana's life. Last, we reviewed Ben's study guide work and continued noting the author's use of imagery and simile.
