Today we started with an ACT question type. I drew a picture of a bird in a tree 24 feet above the ground and a guy taking a photo of it from ground level 7 ft from the base of the tree. I asked him what the angle of elevation must be to get the perfect photo shot. JPaul considered the triangle, labeled the sides. I asked him what trig function relates the angle and the 2 given sides? Since we were given opposite and adjacent, we used tangent. We set up the equation and discussed how inverse trig functions would be needed to solve for the angle. We used our calculator and found the inverse tangent of the sides to get the angle measure. Next we worked in our notes on solving for missing side lengths. We used a similar approach, setting up trig equations and solving.

Unit 8- Rhetorical Analysis Essay/Style and Tone
Lesson Outline
We studied ,revised, and edited JP's rhetorical analysis essay . We noted a strong introduction and a thesis that outlined that the essay would address diction and pathos. I assisted JP in recognizing that his examples-rhetorical questions- did not clearly evidence either pathos or ethos. As such, we rewrote the paragraph to explain how each rhetorical question employed "we" as a means of demonstrating a shared value or experience with the intended audience-ethos. I then directed JP to a portion of the speech that evoked emotion or pathos and we discussed how to incorporate that example into the next paragraph. As JP had questions on how to draft a conclusion to this type of essay, we reviewed various options and approaches. JP will conclude his rewrite this evening.
