Discuss the use of nuclear energy to produce electricity. Examine how electricity is produced using a turbine. Outline the fission reaction of uranium 235 into uranium 236, the instability of U-236 and the release of 3 million times more energy than an equal amount of coal. View a diagram of how a nuclear reactor works, and discuss the use of control rods to prevent overheating and meltdown.
Today JPaul and I practiced working on the unit circle to find reference angles and coterminal angles. We used the white board to draw an angle like 150 degrees. I asked JPaul how to get to that location going in the negative direction. JPaul tries to do a lot of math in his head. I encouraged him to do a quick sketch, so he could actually SEE what quadrant he was in, and how far he would need to go in the negative direction. He complied and realized that it WAS actually helpful to see it. Then we practiced finding the reference angles - the angles formed with the x-axis (which is what we will need to find in the next lesson).
Discuss in detail the advantages and disadvantages of coal, oil, and methane, all of which are used as fuels. Examine the different methods of extraction of each, the costs involved, and the risks. Analyze storage and shipping, along with possible hazards occurring. Include oil spills, gas leaks and coal ash pits. Discuss alternative fuels to fossil fuels and examine their advantages and disadvantages to the ecosystem
Today we began a new unit on Trigonometry. We started with angles and their measure. We worked in a coordinate plane and discussed positive angles rotate counterclockwise, but negative angles rotate clockwise. We discussed the relationship between degrees and radians. Then we practiced changing given angles in degrees to radians and given angles in radians to degrees.
Unit 7- Introductions,Conclusions/ Qualifying arguments
Lesson Outline
We focused on JP's Unit 7 review exercise which addressed composition skills. I provided explanations for a number of questions where JP encountered difficulties, specifically how to narrow a claim, where to place modifiers, and last how to use transitions such as "because, while, and although,." JP further had difficulty writing his argumentative essay that was due today. I provided guidance on drafting the first paragraph, specifically forming a thesis and contextualizing the thesis by anecdote , historical data, quotes, or a rhetorical question. We further discussed the need to avoid summarizing the prompt .
