Lesson Outline
Define ecological succession and stress that it may take centuries to accomplish.
Introduce primary succession, from bare rock to mid succession plants. Examine how algae dissolve rock to obtain minerals and then convert the rock to soil when they decompose. Discuss how the thin layer of poor soil becomes hospitable for plant life. Indicate how new species colonize the area and outcompete the mid succession plants by adapting to temp. and rainfall.
Introduce and discuss secondary succession, which starts from soil and not rock. Explain how trees replace grasses and wildflowers and become the pioneer species. Lead from pioneer species to climax community due to rain and temperature and shade provided,

Unit 5- Evidence/Transitions/ Synthesis essay
Lesson Outline
As JP encountered some difficulty on the homework AP MCQs on section 5.2, we first reviewed the three passages and examined the process for choosing the correct answer and discussed why JP's answers were not the best choice. I then outlined the syllabus for Unit 5 followed by reviewing JP's homework answers on the assigned essay on the issue of reparations for the African-American community. We identified the writer's thesis first. Then, I pointed out the writer's strong use of multilayered evidence and commentary. We amplified JP's homework responses to highlight how the writer's evidence supported his thesis.

Today JPaul and I discusded how to rationalize radical expressions. I explained to JPaul that it's considered "bad math" to leave radicals/roots in the denominator. To rid the denominators of these roots we must use a process called rationalizing. If we see the square root of a number, we multiply by itself. If there are two terms in the deminator, we multiply by the conjugate. We used the "I do, we do, you do" method of practicing these problems.
