We continued to study how to compose the rhetorical analysis essay. Using Lincoln's Gettysburg address ,I provided instruction on elements of syntax: parallelism, anaphora, and chiasmus. After discussing Lincoln's purpose and audience, I then provided instruction on composing an engaging first sentence for a rhetorical analysis essay. In this regard, we focused on the power of Lincoln's 272 words as well as the irony in Lincoln's comment that the "world will little remember what we say here today." We then focused on the assignment due on Monday , a rhetorical analysis of a speech by JFK. We discussed Kennedy's purpose , his audience, and the exigence of the speech as a framework for the analysis.
Today we watched a video on YouTube that talked about the different words in Spanish between Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. After, he started to write an essay about the video.
We completed our analysis of Emerson's esoteric essay titled"On Nature ". After I reviewed the techniques employed in a descriptive essay ,JP identified in the passage examples of metaphors, personification and imagery. We then explored the abstract metaphor of the "transparent eyeball" . We noted how Emerson uses a compare/contrast organization in addition to description to advance his argument. Further ,we explored how Emerson's view of communicating with God through Nature contrasts with the famous quote of St Paul that mortal men can only"see through a glass darkly" while on this earth. Further, I defined the type of metaphor known as schenecdoche and we located an example of this device in the essay. We discussed why personification and schenedoche are effective rhetorical devices . Last, we studied a painting by Thomas Cole,"The picnic", and explored how the painter's theme illustrates the thesis of Emerson's essay.
Yesterday JPaul was to complete the quiz. When I looked through it, there were some problems he did not answer. So I gave it back to him to completre. When he finished the quiz, we graded it together. He got a 58% on it. He was pretty bummed about it. He made many many silly mistakes. It seemed conceptually JPaul knew what to do, but he made inconsistent errors throughout his work. He added exponents when he was supposed to subtract. He multiplied when he was supposed to divide. Luckily, there will be several more quizzes this quarter for him to improve this portion of his grade. Additionally, we will continue to review these concepts as we continue through the course.
