Nicky surprises me on how quickly he picks up concepts. However, he wants to compute everything in his head and gets a little lazy on using the graph paper to plot the coordinates and write all the steps. This is why he makes mistakes on his final answers. I'm trying to work with him on slowing down and not depending on the calculator as much.
Practice square roots, rational/ irrational numbers, and finding the missing side using the pythagorean theorem.

Lesson Comments
Nicky did very well on his classwork. He picks up concepts easily but doesn't execute the formulas very well. This is because he tries to compute everything in his head or on the calculator and ends up missing a step. If he slows down and writes all his steps, he would do so much better. I started him on 8th grade math topics because he was getting bored with topics that he has already learned. However, I'm taking a few minutes every class to review all the topics.
Lesson 1: Earth Systems and Interactions – We learned that Earth has small systems that interact with each other: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the geosphere, the biosphere and the cryosphere. The atmosphere is a layer of gases and particles of matter that surround Earth. Earth’s water forms the system called the hydrosphere, most of which is on the planet’s surface. Earth’s largest system is called the geosphere, which is mainly solid rock covered in many places by a thin layer of soil. The biosphere is the Earth system that contains all the living things on the planet.
Assignment: Add definitions for carbon cycle, greenhouse gases, and phosphorus cycle to science notebook.
Nicky and I tried to get through as much of lesson 1 as we could, with recess cutting off the last 15 minutes of our lesson. We read through the entire chapter together as I explained key concepts through the whiteboard.

I subbed for Ms. Janis and followed her sub plans. Nicky and I enjoyed this time of drama specially to get away from Math for a little while. We enjoyed acting out the improvisation topics and didn't get to the script.

Lesson Comments
Nicky worked diligently on identifying sentence fragments and run on sentences in IXL at Grade Level 9. This is the first time he worked to achieve 100%! He usually quits at 80%. He is really trying harder to increase his grammar skills.
I. The student will work on selected topics in his IXL Program including identifying foreign language expressions, identifying roots, and using commonly misused words correctly.

Nicky is easily frustrated but presses on with encouragement.
Lesson 3: Particles in Motion – We learned about heat and changes of state. When thermal energy is added to solid ice its temperature increases until it starts to melt changing to liquid water. When thermal energy is removed from liquid water its temperature decreases until it starts to freeze changing to solid ice. Then we learned that when thermal energy is removed from a gas it changes to a liquid through a process called condensation. Next we learned that sublimation occurs when a solid absorbs energy and changes directly to a gas without first becoming a liquid. Deposition occurs when a gas changes directly to a solid without first becoming a liquid. Then we learned that thermal energy moves quickly in a thermal conductor and slowly in a thermal insulator.

Define Pythagorean theorem, when is it used, solve problems using the theorem. Nicky picked up the theorem very easily. However, application of the theorem will take practice. He gets confused when he has to multiply big numbers or find square roots of big numbers. Practicing multiplication and square roots will help.
