Jack practiced blending words with the long vowel sounds /e/ and /o/ before reading ‘A Dog Like Scruff.’ Our focus while reading was using all three cueing systems (meaning, syntax, and visual) to read accurately. At the end of our session, Jack played a memory game on Lumosity.com.
Jack read ‘How Bear Lost His Tail’ a story slightly above his independent reading level. Our focus while reading was using strategies for working out unfamiliar words, especially blending letter sounds to decode. We also practiced reading on to look for clues to unknown words using a “Does that make sense? Does it look right? Does it sound right?” questioning approach.
Jack practiced the spelling patterns - or, - ore, and -oar, noticing when to use each. We manipulated each pattern using magnetic letter tiles and changing one word to another. He completed the book ‘A Dog Like Scruff’ and reread a selection from the book (text only) at a rate of 63 words correct per minute.
Jack read ‘A Dog Like Scruff’ with accuracy and fluency. He was very engaged with the text, making predictions and inferences as he read. We used his spelling patterns for /I/, -y, -igh, and -i for our word work, playing a game of Quick Erase.
Jack read a level H book independently, although I did not tell him the book’s level. We worked on blending and manipulating sounds in CVC, CCVC, and CVCe words. To end our time together, he played a brain game on Lumosity.com.
