Today's lesson expanded on comparing numbers using matching to include comparing numbers using numerals to 10. Libby counted groups of objects, wrote numbers to show how many, and marked the groups with a circle or an X to compare the groups and identify which was greater or less in number. During this activity, Libby used a number line to help determine how many more or how many less were in each group.

Vocabulary
Lesson Outline
Libby and I completed a cut and paste visual activity with some of the vocabulary that she has been hearing in our discussions of Day of the Dead.

She then used clay to make little sculptures that matched up with the vocabulary.

She made a flower, a tombstone, a skeleton, and a cute little candle that turned part human.

We connected today's lessons with those of the past by saying how she can now understand the phrase I like the flowers.

She had her figurine dance and the figurine would sing baila baila baila while dancing. Libby had her senorita velita even say me gusta while she was playing.

Comparing and Contrasting
Lesson Outline
Today, Libby and I revisited our conversation about Day of the Dead. I asked her a number of questions about her Halloween experience. As she answered questions, we compared and contrasted her Halloween experience with the celebration of Day of the Dead. We spoke about the scariest costume that she saw (an alien). We spoke about if she observed someone dressed as a skeleton. We discussed how that is in some ways like Day of the Dead as you can see people dressed as skeletons on both days. We spoke about what Halloween means to her (time with family) and compared that with what people are celebrating on Day of the Dead. We spoke again about how it is primarily the people of Mexico who celebrate. We found Mexico on a map. In our discussion, we spoke about some of the things that she liked about Halloween and things she did not like. Libby did an amazing job of remembering how to use Me gusta. She was able to easily express things that she liked with Me Gusta and No me gusta. We took a second to pretend that her Pez dispenser witch was talking and saying things that she likes such as candy, black clothing, and being a witch.

Libby wanted to make another Day of the Dead skeleton mask. So, I allowed her to make one while we had our discussion.
