We started off with current world news from the British Broadcasting Service. The headlines were all about President Putin and his alleged involvement with a scandal in Panama. Also country music legend Merle Hagart had died. (Jackson has not heard of him).We then looked at the New York Times. Surprisingly there was not much on the presidential campaign except that Cruz won in Wisconsin.
There is an extensive article on subtle changes in baseball (ie... number of bases stolen and numbers of relief pitchers being used). We spent the remainder of the session reviewing these changes as stated in the Sunday New York Times. Very interesting reader (even for this adult who doesn't understand all things baseball, but loves it anyway!!)
Rules and Responsibilities: Following rules at school and home, and the consequences for not following rules were discussed. Responsibilities at home and school shows that we are considered to be dependable and trustworthy by others, the consequences for not being responsible were also discussed. Ben filled out answers required for the topic, good going, Ben.
Families and Trade: Trade is a means that helps families get the things they need. In Nicaragua people often trade goods to get what they need. Scarcity is not having enough food to eat or clean water to drink. Today's lesson gave us insight into how fortunate we are and opened our eyes to help people who do not have basic things that we take for granted. Good going, Ben.
Famous Inventors: Today we studied famous inventors, The Wright Brothers, Graham Bell, Newton, and others. We read about their inventions and contributions. Ben was very interested, asking questions and involved with the discussion. Great job, Ben.
We read the assigned reading on the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War and discussed the challenges the newly united government faced in rebuilding the south and protecting the rights of newly freed slaves.
