Today was my first session with Jayne! We spent time trading facts about each other and talking. I was able to really dig in deep about her interests and passions. We also took time to go through some of her previous social studies/science work to decide where we should gear her studies towards next!

Great first day! I think Jayne and I will be excellent partners :)
Henry worked on the garden this morning. He checked that all the plants were watered and still alive after spring break. He also planted the brussel sprouts and celery in the garden that had grown in the jiffy pot.
Arianna and I reviewed geography, locating countries and continents on the map before reading "Ms. Frizzle's Adventures in Ancient Egypt." We found many new words to define - agriculture, fertile, modern, tourist, scribe and barter.
Henry did a lesson on an introduction to the 13 colonies. We talked about the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies and the names of each. He identified each colony and placed it in the correct location on a map.
Arianna reviewed the new words on her social studies word wall: pharaoh plague expedition territory interpreter barter Arianna looked at a map of the United States and located the route taken by Lewis and Clark. She explained the purpose of their journey. We also talked a bit about the Louisiana Purchase and how this connected to Lewis and Clark. We reviewed what Arianna had learned so far in the book, "A Picture Book of Sacagawea." I read the rest of the book to Arianna. We looked at the dates in the back of the book and we reviewed the important highlights of the life of Sacagawea. We then looked at pictures in another book, "The Saga of Lewis and Clark into the Uncharted West." We talked about each picture.

Empire State Building / The White House / Magic Tree House
Lesson Outline
Today we continued on with our Florida Studies Weekly of American Monuments. We read more about the Empire State Building and watched animated video of its construction. We read a passage with facts about the building and Danny answered follow-up questions. We learned that it took only 410 days to build and that was at the time of the beginning of the Great Depression. The building was completed in 1931, is 102 stories, and 1,454 feet high. It was the tallest building in the world for many years. They put on special lights during celebrations and events and people can get married on the 80th floor on Valentine’s Day! To follow up our study of The White House yesterday, we completed a flip square activity for Danny’s Interactive Notebook. On each of the four flaps, Danny wrote four facts about The White House. Finally, we finished up our Magic Tree House book, Hour at the Olympics, by Mary Pope Osborne. Danny was interested in helping read some of the words in the book today! We read about how they used the secret book to call for help. A beautiful white horse with a chariot appeared to take them out of the stadium and then it transformed into Pegasus and flew them to the treehouse. Morgan Le Fay explained that it was a piece of Greek mythology and is now a constellation in the sky.
Craig and I reviewed for Friday's Quiz. Afterwards, we spent class reviewing geography, specifically landforms, with flashcards and pictures on Khan Academy and with maps of Vietnam.
