Charlie and I continued to learn about Greek mythology. He turned in homework, although he did not complete it. We reviewed mythological stories, creation, explanations, and the Olympians. We looked at Mensa Eucation and Research Foundation website and the Greek view of the world. We also looked at a biographical poem, answering prompts, that allowed us to create a story of a mythical hero. I gave Charlie a HOMEWORK assignment that is due next Friday. He is to create a mythological hero and write about him, illustrate him (he already completed that) and list his powers, symbols, and personality traits. I gave him some guidelines and resources to help him. We looked at the Newsela article on mythology together. We looked at myths on History.com and Starfall and learned about Theseus and the maze, wings and Icarus, Pegasus and Midas.
Henry would not participate in social studies today. We would have finished watching the video on the Nightmare at Jamestown and began discussing Plymouth.
Jayne and I watched a BrainPop Jr. video about Ruby Bridges and her experience as the first white child to integrate a Birmingham elementary school. Jayne seemed to have a good deal of background knowledge about segregation and its inherent unfairness. She was impressed by Ruby’s courage and had lots of questions about her experience.
For social studies today, we continued working on our George Washington pamphlet report. We wrote about how George led our country by fighting for freedom from England and in his family life he was married to Martha and made a home at Mount Vernon. We had fun stamping out the letters to spell “Washington” on a paper. We then looked at the quarter and Danny used a colored pencil to coin rub the image of the quarter on his paper several times. It gave a neat perspective of Washington’s profile on the quarter.
Charlie and I reviewed vocabulary words on the word wall. We discussed why the ancient Greeks created myths. We also discussed their version of the creation of the world, from chaos. We reviewed different heroes. Charlie created his own, with special powers and symbols. He finished an excellent illustration of Perdere for his Book of Myths. He even referenced the Latin translation of the word "destroy" to name him, which I thought was very smart! We discussed the weekend HOMEWORK assignment. He will turn in the Newsela article on Friday. Finally, we followed a lesson from the Mensa Educational Network to learn more about Greek Mythology characters, their story, their family tree, and how modern brand names have used these words to evoke the same attributes or characteristics.
Henry did a new lesson on the settlement in Jamestown today. We read an article about the settlers and who they were and the hardships they faced trying to make a new colony. He began watching a documentary called "Nightmare in Jamestown" by National Geographic which depicted the life of the settlers and the Powhatan in Jamestown.
