Jayne began the lesson by reading the Florida Studies Weekly lesson on
maps. She studied the map of Florida and identified the capital. She accurately named all the parts of a map. Next, she was introduced to a world map with the continents and oceans.
Jayne continued working on her "Where I live" booklet. She identified our continent, country and state so far. Next, she will be working on her town, street and house.
Henry chose a current event article today on a litter of eight Cheetahs that were born at the St. Louis zoo. We read the article and learned that cheetahs usually only have one or two cubs so to have eight was extraordinary. He also learned that there are very few cheetahs left in the wild due to human interference and disappearing habitats. He answered comprehension questions and watched a video of the baby cheetahs after we read the article.
Arianna and I reviewed U.S. symbols, monuments and memorials with the manipulatives she made last week, and picture cards we created. We posted her "Goals" on her wall - piano, singing, dancing, and America's Got Talent. We read "So You Want to be President" by Judith St. George and David Small.
Craig and I discussed new procedures - planning, assignments and preparation for Quiz - all of which we will put in new student organizer/calendar ordered. We went over together Questions for Consideration relative to WWI. These are questions he should be able to answer and look at over the next week. He did not have a backpack or homework folder with him today. (Folders have been ordered.) I will send him home with flashcards and questions to study during the week to prepare for the Quiz next Monday. He should also take a picture of his green word wall. I told him this. Tomorrow I will make sure he does this in my presence. I would like him to bring back flashcards every day - to review and add to. The Quiz will be on WWI, Industrial Revolution, Reconstruction, and green word wall vocabulary. We discussed and went through my notes since the last Quiz. I will copy these for him as well.
Henry and I researched the cycas/sago palm and the mango tree. He had a mango seed and a miniature/bonsai sago palm, both of which he took home today. We learned about the difference between the male seed pod cone and the female seed ball. We read about how to care for them and where they grow best. We also learned about cutting the mango "hedgehog" style and "corn on the cob" style. I will bring in a mango next week to practice these methods with Henry.
Charlie and I spent some time to discuss two HOMEWORK assignments, one for later, one for the weekend, but due on Wednesday the 31st. He will make a poster or brochure about an important person from The Renaissance. Later, after we've covered Reformation, he has a folding graphic organizer to complete, comparing and contrasting The Renaissance and The Reformation eras. Today we went through classnotes and Studies Weekly assessments to review for a Quiz (on everything we've covered since his last Quiz) on Monday. Charlie has misplaced his student organizer/calendar where he is supposed to keep track of assignments, homework, due dates, Quizzes, etc.
We began with Danny’s Interactive Notebook project and addressed the differences in cooking from long ago and today. Danny wrote that long ago they used wood and fire. For today, he wrote that today we use an oven. We then read a Time for Kids news magazine and watched a Brain Pop Jr learning video about Rosa Parks. We were reminded about segregation and her fight for equal rights. We couldn’t believe that she tried to register to vote three times before she could actually vote. When Bill Clinton was President, he gave Rosa Parks an award for all she did to help our country. Next, we enjoyed chapters 3-6 of Mummies in the Morning. Jack and Annie followed the black cat into the pyramid. They headed into the burial chambers. There they found a scepter. A figure moved past them and tried to take it. Jack’s history book informed them that tomb robbers would break into the burial chambers and take treasures from the tombs. The children met a woman in a white gown who was named Queen Hutepi. This queen of the Nile was in ghost form. She needs their help to find the Book of the Dead to pass on to the next life. The children helped her read a secret message written in hieroglyphs on the wall (stairs, boat, jug, and cloth). Danny and I discuss these vocabulary words as we read the book and will explore further with internet research after completing the book.
