Lesson Outline
Ethan used the chat to address final questions related to the review assignment regarding the Barefoot Mailman. I had better luck working with Ethan related to sharing screens and using chat to communicate. Like Jackson, I ended Ethan's written assignment because his laptop does not have Word. I asked him to answer questions using chat that were related to the book. We registered for the Stock Market game and looked at some of the items on the site, as well as, the first reading assignment that we will do together during our next session.
A brief overview of Economics, the Stock Market and Market game. Jackson registered for the online contest related to the contest. We talked about the previous assignment related to Haiti. I will grade him on what he completed to date.

I was unable to disable elmo and share the screen with Jackson today. His laptop does not have a file that will allow him to finish the Haiti project. I have decided to grade what he has done to date. He registered for an online Stock Market game before the end of the session.
Ben and I continued to learn more about World War II today. We read about the invasion at Normandy and watched a short video on History.com. We reviewed vocabulary. We discussed wartime propaganda, the history of Uncle Sam, and Rosie the Riveter. Ben read about Rosie and learned about the importance of her image to that time. We learned about landing craft/ amphibious vehicles and discussed the Tuskegee Airmen and the atomic bomb. We watched a BrainPop movie about the Tuskegee Airmen. Ben was very interested in that. Ben wanted to share a video with me that I found very very interesting and which I will share with my other students. It was "Our Narrow Slice" on VSauce.
Gwendolyn and I continued reading in two texts about World War II. We discussed the draft, the Tuskegee airmen, the Holocaust and Japanese internment camps. We noted new vocabulary. We watched a short video on History.com about D-Day, the Normandy invasion. We compared the number of casualties between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the atomic bombs in Japan. We learned about Pearl Harbor on BrainPop.
Stephen expressed concern about not being ready for the map of the USA quiz. I gave him some time to to study and practice. We also talked about where we are heading next related to the study of the Stock Market.

I was able to share the contents of a dropbox folder/files that Jackson created for the Haiti project. However, Jackson was unable to edit the documents. I am hoping he can find a doc., pdf, or ppt. format on his computer that will allow him to finish the project.

First Skype session with Jackson today. I was able to send him a link that allowed him to open files in a dropbox folder. That was great. However, he was unable to edit/revise the documents. I provided him with directives that will allow him to continue/finish the assignment. I asked him to try and access the documents post Skype to see if he can open/edit the files. We also tried to find a file format on his laptop to copy and paste the documents. Apparently, he doesn't have Word (doc), Adobe (pdf), or Power Point (ppt) on his laptop. I gave him my email address and asked him to contact me if he is unable to open and edit the documents. I may have to switch the project to an oral presentation where he incorporates images, instead of a booklet (print) format. I am hoping he is not that limited related to software programs on his computer.
Bobby is fine-tuning the presentation. He still needs to address one more focal question near the end of the iMovie, as well as, add background music. He is becoming more proficient with the software, which will lead to a more imaginative/creative final product.

Bobby is fine tuning the presentation. However, there is one more focal question that needs to be addressed prior to the final product. The iMovie program is getting easier for him to use, which leads to a more creative presentation.
Today we began with a review of the calendar and the AABC picture pattern. We are really practicing yesterday, today, and tomorrow as these are tricky for Danny. Then, we continued in our new area of study by watching the Brain Pop Jr. learning video about needs and wants. We saw that we need shelter, clothes, food, and water. Then we saw that Moby the robot wanted a pet monkey, trampoline, pony, cupcake, and a computer! We talked about how these are things he'd like to have but does not need them to live. Additionally, we reviewed our FL Studies Weekly about needs and saw that people get jobs and earn money so that they may purchase goods and services that they want and need. Danny completed the activity page. He circled things that are "needs" in a field of pictures. I then read the meaning of "need" and "want" and Danny had to choose the proper word. He had to draw a picture of something he wants and he drew a robot! Danny completed his writing task from our previous session in which he copied the words of sorted needs and wants pictures. Finally, we watched a telling of the fun fiction story, Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type, by Doreen Cronin. In this amusing tale, the cows find an old typewriter and type a letter to Farmer Brown stating that they "want" electric blankets to keep them warm in the barn at night! They go on strike and refuse to give milk, along with the hens who now refuse to give eggs until they get blankets, too! The farmer "needs" the eggs and milk to run his farm. It's quite the dilemma of need vs. want! We then began a fun story booklet of our own in which we are writing in funny things other animals on the farm may "want".
