The Barefoot Mailman
Lesson Outline
We read aloud from p.118-124. We used popcorn reading which allowed us to take turns reading from the text. We stopped to highlight words that were difficult to pronounce. I asked Stephen if he knew the meaning of those words, too. Also, prior to reading, I asked Stephen what he is responsible for related to the post-reading assignment and to focus on things related to the story that will help him be successful in completing the post-reading assignment.

Lesson Comments
I asked Stephen if he enjoys reading in general, and more specifically, The Barefoot Mailman. He likes the story, but doesn't do a lot of reading beyond school. Stephen enjoys popcorn reading because it allows us to share the reading. He does lose focus at times while I am reading. I will read shorter passages and place more emphasis on him paying attention and knowing exactly where we are in the reading.

George Washington / Presidents and Patriots
Lesson Outline
We began with a review of George Washington. We watched a brief biographical video about him online. We then pieced together a fun picture of him using the hat and face we colored the other day. We added a coffee filter to represent the puffy collars of the clothes of their time. Additionally, we added cotton balls for his fluffy white hair! Danny helped with a fill in the blank vocabulary activity in which he helped provide key facts about George Washington with two choices presented. We reviewed our Florida Studies Weekly packet on Presidents and Patriots. We were reminded that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were presidents and patriots. Harriet Tubman was a patriot who helped slaves escape as was Benjamin Franklin who helped fight for our country's freedom. Danny was very engaged in this learning today, as he was pointing to pictures and asking questions about who each was. We then took an assessment to test his knowledge of the packet in which he scored 5/5. To end or sessions, we enjoyed the factual book, Valentine’s Day Is...by Gail Gibbons. This book presents the origins of the holiday and shares what the day has come to mean in the current day.
