Ajedrez - Chess Pieces
Lesson Outline
Teddy and I discussed the chess pieces in Spanish. He then got to choose a chess piece about which to watch a video in Spanish. He chose La Torre.

This was intentionally used as a source material in the target language discussing a familiar subject.

Teddy then was given an opportunity to move the pieces around the board in a game. Each time that he would move, he would say "I move the ______ (name of the chess piece)." in Spanish.

Teddy will many times do a great and quick job of internalizing the information that we use in class and retaining it. However, today when I asked him the name of some the pieces at the end of our session, he was not able to say them.

We discussed this and highlighted the importance of having fun and learning while we do it.

Holidays and interesting facts
Lesson Outline
We began our session looking at an unusual science article showing images of a two-headed snake. Teddy was very interested in this rare reptilian phenomenon, and we read and learned a little about it. Next, we learned about the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Teddy shared his knowledge about this holiday and learned more information to add to his existing knowledge base. We learned that it commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French during a battle that occurred 163 years ago. We looked at pictures and read that we celebrate here in the United States with parades, festivals, Mariachi bands, Mexican folk music, dancing, Mexican and Mexican American cuisine, and festive costumes. We watched a mariachi band play songs and learned the vocabulary words 'commemorate' and 'cuisine,' amongst others that came up in our research.
