Topic 12: Understand Fractions as Numbers / Partition Regions into Equal Parts
Lesson Outline
Topic 11: Use Operations with Whole Numbers to Solve Problems. Jack will complete the assessment that he started yesterday. Then move on to Topic 12: Understand Fractions as Numbers. Jack will work on Lesson 1: Partition Regions into Equal Parts.
Jack worked on vocalic R today. He took a while to warm up and participate.
ER continues to be the most challenging for Jack. His AIR, IRE, AR, EAR, OR were 80% accurate today. His accuracy is improving in the initial position of words.
Jack was given five minutes to choose an image that he would like to use as a reference for his last design. Jack chose a military vehicle and began placing the flats of his design.
I asked Jack to continue to read in the novel we started by Louis Sachar and asked him to act out some of the parts and use the proper emotions and expressions when reading. Jack reads well and will attempt to sound out and decode words if they are unfamiliar. He paces himself properly, pausing effectively at end marks, and using proper inflections to denote the author's intent. I enjoy watching him engage in class and be an active participant.
I asked Jack to begin reading about local governments in our text and compare them to our federal and state governments. We noted that they both have executive and legislative branches and learned that the legislative branch of a local government, called a city council, makes laws for the city, and that the mayor is the head. We also noted that citizens can attend city council meetings and that in some cities, people can watch the meetings on TV. We read that some cities have city managers head the executive branch, but that in larger cities, such as Chicago and NY, the mayor is the head of the executive branch. We discussed similarly to state governments, local governments provide services to people but that one major difference between them is the sharing of power; local governments have only the power that the state gives to them. Finally, we read that most cities use county courts where judges preside. After concluding our session, Jack was encouraged to think why some cities put their city council meetings on television.
We discussed the benefits of exercise and the importance of warming up and stretching to prepare your body and minimize injury prior to physical exercise and exertion. We discussed how exercise can help improve muscular fitness, academic performance, and can help put you in a good mood. Additional benefits discussed included how important exercise is for heart health; it helps your heart pump blood all through your body, and it helps your body stay at or reach a healthy weight. We then went outside, took a brisk walk, stretched and performed some exercises, and enjoyed the day's delightful weather. Jack took an interest in the plants, and I allowed him to water them. He enjoyed himself, did a good job, and responded politely when a classmate asked to help him.
