Kip was a pleasure to work with today! We began our session picking up a reading activity started by his teacher. He has already read two passages prior to my arrival. Then, together,he answered a series of comprehension questions to compare and contrast the two articles. We went back to the text to find evidence that would support his answers. I noticed how patient and thoughtful he was with his answers, despite the fact that he had a green milkshake waiting for him in the kitchen. Some of his responses were multiple choice, and some were short answer. Kip took his time to select the best choices and write his responses. Next, we completed math lesson 17: Adding Area. I could tell Kip already had a good understanding of finding area, so applying this new skill came easily for him. He simply had to add the areas of two rectangles to find the total area of a shape. He did very well. Next, Kip did a segment of iready, a computer based learning game. He had 15 minutes to solve a variety of questions involving fractions on a number line, which was review. This presented a little more of a challenge as the fractions became greater than one, but about 1/2 way through he said, "I get it now!" and finished with 83% accuracy. After that, Kip had a division drill. He scored 18/20 (90%) in one minute and 20 seconds. Multiples of 12 slowed him down. The last part of our session was to watch a Science video in Google Classroom, titled, "Where Can You Find Whales in the Desert? Kip was very skeptical of this, but fascinated to learn about all the oceanic fossils that have been discovered in the midwest. It opened a lot of dialogue and questions he had about the possibilities and changes that have occurred on Earth. We had a few minutes left in our session, so Kip challenged me to a game of Chess! He was very good, and he taught me with patience. Then, he enjoyed beating me in the end. It was super fun! Can't wait to work with Kip again tomorrow.
