Luna used Twistables to write sight words iron, study, bury, and odd. She added these words into her card file. Luna read The Author Visit from the Black Lagoon and discussed it. Luna wrote about why she wants to have a dog. We discussed sentence format. She did the hula hoop and sidewalk chalk to practice sight words.

We read The Napping House and worked on rules for adding ing to words. She sorted words into the correct rule, double the consonant on a short vowel word, drop the e on a word ending with a silent e, and just adding ing. With magnetic letters, Luna practiced new sight words, move, listen, put, and bush. She read another Black Lagoon book and discussed it. She wrote about going to 2nd grade. We reviewed spelling and sentences in her earlier writing. Luna did an activity identifying vowels. She did hula hoop and sidewalk chalk to practice the sight words.

We reviewed words with long vowels, ild, ind, old, oll, olt, and ost. We discussed short vowel words (CVC) and long vowel words CVVC and CVCe. We made contraction folders and discussed how they are made and how to pronounce them. We read Gerald and Piggie stories together with the stuffed animals. Luna wrote a few sentences about Piggie and Gerald. Using change-color markers, Luna practiced the sight words whom, whose, once, and always. Together we read the book on Malala that she chose in our last class. We went outside to practice the sight words with sidewalk chalk. Luna then used a hula hoop to practice spelling these words.

The book in the "Who Is" series was pretty difficult for Luna. I am going to bring a picture book of Malala to our next class. I will look for Black Lagoon books in the library. These will be more at her level.

Lesson Comments
Luna has good letter formation in her writing and attempts to spell words using her phonics knowledge. Luna has inconsistent knowledge of phonics rules. She uses what she knows to try to sound out words. She knows some basic sight words, but needs to work on others. She sometimes reads multisyllabic words and sometimes struggles with them. I will have five two-hour sessions before Luna goes on a one-week vacation. Then we will have one more two-hour session before she is assessed at Jupiter Christian to see if she can be promoted.

Luna was 15 minutes late. For alphabetic awareness, Luna sequenced the alphabet (1:42), identified the vowels and built CVC syllables. I conducted visual and blending drills (all letters and digraphs). Next, Luna practiced syllable division with two and three syllable words with closed syllables. She really enjoys the task! I dictated detached syllables for her to match to make real words. To conclude, we played a board game, "Is it a noun or a verb?"

After alphabetic awareness, I conducted visual, auditory, and blending drills. Luna syllabicated two-syllable VCCV words (Recipe for Reading, p. 85-86) I dictated the following sentences: "I can shop with a goblin." and "What will happen if I tell Mom?" We played a boardgame with compound words; the goal was to have Luna identify the number of syllables in each word ("pound & sound." I taught a new concept: the open syllable. We played Connect 4 with closed and open syllables to reinforce the concept. To conclude, Luna read two decodable texts from FlyLeaf Publishing, "Dan and Dot" and "Dot Likes to Dig."
