Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
Lesson 3 Design Solutions to Slow Landscape Changes – We learned about design solutions to help slow changes to landscapes caused by natural disasters. One solution is straw wattles which are cylinders made of straw wrapped in a degradable material. They are used to prevent water from eroding the soil on a slope. They are used when there isn’t any vegetation to minimize erosion. They add roughness to slow the water flow and help prevent mudslides.

Creating Our Community
Lesson Outline
Jackson created a beach scene complete with sand, a palm tree, Jackson’s Churros and Donuts Shop, and a giant donut he designed. He may want to add his Jackson's Churros and Donuts Food Truck as well. This beach scene will be part of the larger community we have been creating and will be featured at the end of school concert. Jackson was also excited to share his new paint brush cleaner. We used our problem solving and critical thinkng skills because the instructions on the box were covered up by the address label. We looked up the product on Amazon.com and watched the instructional video.

Lesson Comments
At the beginning of today's lunch, I asked Jackson, like I do every lunch period, if he needed anything heated up. He said he did not. He has been playing video games on a school computer every day during lunch for the last week. Today, he only ate his popcorn and a Go-GURT. When the bell rang to signal the end of lunch, he was upset because he had pasta and fruit and did not eat them. He looked at me and said that I did not heat up his pasta. I told him that I specifically asked him if he had food to be heated, but he was so focused on his video game that he did not look carefully at his lunch. Jackson has also been refusing to go out for recess, so he can play his video games even though I encourage him to go out. Because the second graders are both playing video games on their computers, I think we should ban the use of computers in the lunchroom. This way, the students can focus on meeting their nutritional and social needs and go out for recess.

Creating Our Community
Lesson Outline
I am posing design skills questions to Jackson by having him observe his landscape and buildings and think about options. For Example: Jackson wasn't sure if he should add another house to his landscape. We temporarily taped the house in question onto his landscape, so he could look at it. As designers, we always ask ourselves: Does this add to the design or take away from it? Jackson decided to add the house. Then Jackson created a large apartment building with black windows and a black door. He decided to cut a roof for it without measuring the width of the building and ended up with a roof that was too narrow. I am trying to get Jackson to slow down and think before he starts cutting and drawing. He can use the narrow roof as a chalet. Chef brought in large sheets of cardboard that all the art classes will design and paint to create the set design for the end of school concert.

Lesson Comments
Jackson's behavior in art class is getting progressively worse. First, he continuously skips and runs through the classroom and school hallways after being repeatedly asked to walk. I worry for his safety and the safety of others. In the art room, he is constantly dancing around and making vocal noises to the point that it is very distracting and taking away from my instruction. Instead of thinking, planning, and measuring, he acts impulsively and often has to redo the tasks. I repeatedly must ask him to use slow, calm, and safe movement and to stop humming or vocalizing.
