Jackson continues to create his community of houses and buildings. We are looking at the buildings as a collective whole made by classmates and me to see how they will come together. We designed the landscape for Jackson's houses, and we created clouds and trees out of found materials. We reviewed the principle of aerial perspective: objects in the background are smaller in size, duller in color, and have less detail.
8.9 Display Measurement Data – We learned to use a line plot for measurement. We determine the proper unit for our line plots.

Jackson wrote his Spelling words in ABC order. He completed his interactive calendar. He learned how to use the linking verbs was and were correctly. He finished a reading comprehension activity using his sight words in context. He looked up and wrote the definitions for all his new vocabulary words using guide words and glossary skills. He worked on an activity identifying proper nouns. He read, discussed and wrote a story map for today's story, "Alaska a Special Place." He located compound words in today's story. He identified the silent k in a reading comprehension activity.
The teacher reviewed previously learned vocabulary related to prepositions. The student repeated the words after the teacher. Then, the teacher conducted a quick review by asking the student to place the pen in different locations according to the prepositions given. At the end of the lesson, the student completed three practice exercises.
Jackson worked on his cardboard houses to create his community/village. He has a variety of materials to create his community: cardboard, burlap, buttons, sticks, material, felt, ribbon, etc. I am having him slow down, think, and measure before he cuts out cardboard pieces. I am also posing a challenge or a problem for him and asking him how he would solve it. I am encouraging more critical thinking and problem solving for Jackson.
Lesson 2 Quick Changes to Earth’s landscape – We learned that flooding can be considered both a slow and rapid change to Earth’s surface depending on the amount of snowmelt or precipitation. Flash floods may result from heavy rainfall and can sweep away crops, rocks, soil, and plants. We learned that volcanic eruptions can happen quickly. The sudden eruption of a volcano can be violent, resulting in gas, molten rock, ash, and bits of rock spewing into the air. A volcano can also produce the slow release of lava resulting in landforms. We learned that geophysicists study changes to Earth’s surface.
8.8 Choose a Tool – We learned to use a new measuring tool called a yardstick. We learned that there are 3 feet in 1 yard. Then we learned that there are 36 inches in 1 yard. We practiced using the appropriate tool either a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape.
