Christianity's Spread to the Americas & Asia/Review LEQ HW
Lesson Outline
Today we discussed the spread of Christianity to Spanish America from 1500 - 1700. China's encounter was different - between 1500 - 1700, Jesuits in China took specific aim at elites. The Jesuits respected education and practiced Christian principles. Therefore, they respected Chinese culture. While a small % of elites converted to Christianity, China retained it's religious traditions. By 1715 the Chinese Emperor forbade Westerners from spreading their religion in China. This was a very different experience from the violent encounters between the Spanish and Native Americans. We then reviewed Joshua's long essay question (LEQ) HW. His essay and the historical facts he used are solid. He needed a bit more in his introduction as well as some more detail in his response. We reviewed his response on AP Central. Joshua then evaluated some of the suggestions AP Central has for a strong response and he observed some additional material that could have been included to strengthen his response.

The Protestant Reformation & the Great Schism
Lesson Outline
The 16th & 17th centuries in Europe are a time of political, economic, social & religious tensions. Reformation teachings impacted the role of women in society, as well. Due to the invention of the printing press, Reformation teachings spread quickly. New Protestant, competing movements such as Lutheran, Calvinist, Anglican, Quaker & Anabaptist are examples of an array of Protestant denominations. French society is torn by religious violence between Catholics & a Protestant minority (Huguenots). The culmination of religious conflict took place in the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648). 15 - 30% of the German population perished. It ended with the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 with a changing of boundaries, an agreement that each state was sovereign & a permanently splintered Catholic Europe. A Catholic, Counter-Reformation (1545-1563) ensued. We mapped the Reformation in Europe & the globalization of Christianity. In AP Classroom, we worked on the skill on analyzing a visual source.

Writing a Long Essay Question
Lesson Outline
Today we focused on writing as approximately 2/3 of the AP exam will be writing. Joshua learned more about the expectations for writing on the exam from short answer (FRQ), long answer (LEQ) to data based questions (DBQ). We reviewed the LEQ he has been assigned for HW due on Fri., 12/2. We then segued into a discussion of the early Protestant Reformation.

The Globalization of Christianity
Lesson Outline
We discussed how a cultural tradition largely limited to Europe became a world religion after 1500. This gives rise to another cultural encounter: the rise between science and religion. As science emerges, it gets varying receptions in different parts of the world. We discussed the Crusades, conflict between Christians & Muslims & the seizure of Constantinople in 1453. The Protestant Reformation begins in 1517. We discussed Joshua and writing. I want Joshua to know he writes well and should see writing - especially in this course as a challenge! Rather than reticence re: writing essays, Joshua was reminded to embrace the challenge. It's important as 2/3 of this AP exam is writing. Here is the breakdown of the 2022 World History: Modern AP Exam:
Part I: Multiple-choice questions 55 40% 55 minutes, Part II: Short-answer questions 3 20% 40 minutes, Part III Long essay/DBQ (document based questions). There is a 15-minute reading period)
before students choose an essay topic -15% 40 minutes. I told Joshua I would email this info. to him today, as well.

Review AP Classroom Progress Checks
Lesson Outline
Today we reviewed the AP Classroom/College Board Unit 1 & 2 Progress Checks assigned over Thanksgiving Break. Joshua completed 30 multiple choice questions and wrote answers to three short essay questions called "Frequent Response Questions," aka FRQs. Kudos to Joshua for completing this assignment over the break to help him review the first 6 chapters of the course. We reviewed some of it today and will continue to evaluate his responses tomorrow.

Lesson Comments
Joshua worked on two AP Classroom unit Progress Checks over Thanksgiving Break. On the first unit multiple choice, 5 out of 15 questions were incorrect. This is a score of 67%. On the second unit multiple choice, 3 out of 15 questions were incorrect. This is a score of 80%. Joshua then wrote answers to three free response questions. In the first FRQ response, the thesis should have been a statement of comparison between the Silk and Sand Roads. The contextualization needed more detail. It would have been strengthened with more evidence to provide a broader historical context relevant to the prompt. Joshua writes well and this answer is cohesive and touches upon some solid points. Joshua needs to continue to work on incorporating more historical evidence into written responses that support the prompt. The second FRQ response does identify at least one claim made in the passage. However, more evidence was needed to illustrate the political development of Europe in the period 1200—1450. In the third FRQ, the thesis is on point and does identify at least one claim made in the passage. However, the question wasn't accurately answered as it required reference to two states in Asia or Africa. While China and Japan are referenced, the second paragraph was written about the Church and some of W. Europe. Although interesting, the response asked students to develop an argument that evaluates the extent to which at least two states in Asia or Africa exercised power differently between 1200 - 1450. Nothing is written about Africa in this essay. An important lesson to learn here is to take the time to always read and process the specifics of each FRQ, LEQ or DBQ. We didn't have enough time to review all of the responses today, so we will continue to do this tomorrow.

Test
Lesson Outline
Joshua completed his Chapter 6 Test today in class. Joshua said he was tired and therefore, he did complain a bit about the 4 short answer questions and the one, long essay. I reminded him that this is practice for the actual structure and time allotted to students on the national AP test. Our goal in this class is to prepare Joshua for not only what to expect, but for success on that national AP World History: Modern test in May. Joshua asked a lot of questions during today's test. They weren't content questions, though. They were spelling and grammatical questions.
