Today PJ and I met on Teams. We had two classes today. The first class we spent completing the PEMDAS maze we started yesterday. We used different colors to complete it and it turned out looking pretty. I will print it for him to display in his room tomorrow. The next class we worked on algebraic expressions. We practiced writing the sentences "4 more than n" and "the quotient of b and 3". I was impressed with PJ's ability to do the tricky ones like "7 less than w". Many students make the mistake of writing 7-w, but PJ knew that it should be w-7. This is the first step in setting up algebraic equations.
Today Joshua and I met on Teams. We completed the notes for 2.7B and started 2.8. We covered further the concept of composing functions by substituting one function into the other. Today we considered how that would affect its domain. We discussed what would make a function have restrictions (negative radicals, undefined). We practiced composing the functions and then identifiying their domain. Joshua seemed to pick up on this concept easily, as it is a review from Algebra 2.
Since Christopher did not take a spelling test right before Christmas, he practiced three of the spelling words. Then he took a test on those words. I reminded him of Christmas in the Big House Christmas in the Quarters. We read The Sweet, Sweet Basket, and I showed him my sweet grass basket. We discussed the lowlands of South Carolina where the sweet grass grows.
Ben had a tough class today. He did not want to meet on Teams. I tried to get him to turn on his camera and he ignored me. After convincing him to turn it on, it was toward the ceiling. He hung up on me multiple times. I was disappointed with his lack of effort and how rude he was being to me. Administration had to facilitate him to get on multiple times. With 10 minutes left of class, he finally agreed to get online and showed only a sliver of his eyes. I was ok with that because he finally started to interact. We began discussing the Absolute Value function. We chose values for x to plug into the function and found the corresponding y values. Then we graphed the function and determined it was in the shape of a V.
I reminded Richard of Christmas in the Big House Christmas in the Quarters. Then I read A Sweet, Sweet Basket and showed him my sweet grass basket. We discussed South Carolina lowlands where sweet grass grows.
Today Aiden and I met on Teams. We completed 4.1 on Writing algebraic expressions. Aiden did an excellent job reading the word problems and interpreting how to write the scenario as an algebraic expression. We practiced several problems, for example purchasing "d" pounds of almonds and "c" pounds of cashews at $9.99 and $12.99 per pound (respectively). Aiden was able to set up the expression 9.99d+12.99c to represent the cost of purchasing the nuts. We showed understanding that as d and c vary, the total cost would vary.
Richard used twisting markers to write his spelling words. With letter tiles, we practiced words with ew and oo. He read two books with words he can read.
