Discuss embryology growth and bone growth occurring during the first 2-3 years.
Define and discuss ossification.
View and discuss the epiphyseal growth plates.
View and discuss the ossification of the facial and skull bones, and the incomplete ossification of the fibrous tissue remaining between the skull bones until 2-3 years or life.
Elicit factors which will influence bone growth and repair, and vies hormonal and endocrine growth disorders.
View and discuss video presented by the institute of human anatomy. The subject matter is how bone marrow keeps you alive.
Using printed images and text book material, discuss the information presented in video, along with the classroom instruction.
The general function of the skeletal system is also outlined. This includes the functions of structure, protection, blood cell production, and calcium blood level control.
Initiate a discussion on the need for calcium, the physiological requirement for muscle contraction. Discuss resorption from bone to blood
List the parts which comprise the skeletal system, the bones, cartilage, and connective tissue.
Elicit and list the functions of the skeletal system which include support, movement, protection, formation of blood cells, and storage for xs calcium.
View a diagram of a bone partially vertically cut to expose the bone marrow, blood vessels, and matrix.
Assignment
label a diagram of a skeleton in the anatomical position
Using a diagram of the skin layers and structures, along with photos of aging skin, discuss why skin wrinkles with age showing changes which occur in the elastic fibers and the collagen fibers of the dermal layer.
Introduce some of the other specific structures which exist within the dermis, their functions and interaction with nerve and blood vessels
Use a theoretical patient with a 3rd degree burn. Initiate a discussion of the levels of skin damaged, outward signs, possibilities of septicemia, dehydration, and more internal organ damage.
Discuss skin grafts using patients skin and newer methods which utilize fish skin. View some photos of fish skin grafts and discuss the benefits to their use.
Introduce the term osteoporosis, break down the word into osteo and porosis definitions.
View a photo of bone exhibiting stages of osteoporosis. Discuss the need for vit. C along with calcium to treat the condition by comparing two different patients with different living conditions.
Continue with the discussion of the skin, its cellular makeup and epidermal layer.
Discuss the functions and importance of the epidermis and the keratin contained within.
View slide samples of 2nd degree burn damage and 3rd degree damage.
Elicit why no pain is felt when 3rd degree burns occur.
Explain the ability of skin to prevent dehydration and/or water intake into the body.
List the organs and tissues of the integumentary system.
Present a hypothetical patient presenting with a burn on their arm. View a photo of the burned area and elicit all the visible signs and also what is missing from the area.
Display a diagram of a microscope photograph of skin, and question which area of the skin was affected by the burn.
Determine that it was the epidermis, and discuss the makeup and the function of the epidermis from the sketch. Have Andrew make his own sketch and label.

Lesson Comments
Andrew was very quick in describing how the area looked and what was not seen. ( Blisters, infectious signs)
He had knowledge of the different levels of burns, and we related that to the layer of skin which was affected.
The integumentary system consists of the skin, hair, sweat glands, and hair.
Present with a photo of a person exhibiting a burn on their leg. Elicit characteristics of the burn, how the skin looks. Determine that this represents a first degree burn. View diagrams of skin layers, have Andrew sketch skin layers and label. Introduce terms applicable.
Discuss keratin and the structures formed from it, scales, hair, nails, feathers, horns, and callouses.
Discuss functions of the skin, blistering, infection preventions.
Exaine and sketch the various layers involved
Complete the discussion of body cavities and the organs whithin.
View how the anatomy can be divided into 3 different sections by cutting either through the middle, down the center longitudinally or down the center from left to right.
Discuss some organ definitions and the function of some organs.
Complete the test of anatomical terms which were discussed the last few lessons.
Introduce the anatomy of body cavities by having Andrew sketch a a torso with the body cavites outlined but not named.
Have him label each cavity on the diagram as it is presented, along with the major organs located within that cavity.
