Lesson Outline
Richard did well identifying the initial sound and corresponding letter of given pictures. He completed a page in his 'All About Me' book on how he helps at home and at school. We went over the sight word'the'. Richard did well finding all of the 'the words' in a picture. He also did well identifying the letters in the word the and using the letters to spell the. Next week, a new sight word will be introduced. Richard asked me to read 'The Bug Club'. Focus was on sequence and cause and effect.
Matthew listened to the book, 'My Nest is Best'. After correctly answering questions about the text, he enjoyed making a nest out of a paper plate, sequins and paper. Matthew was excited to go on a letter/sound hunt. Given letters, Matthew looked around the school for objects that began with sounds of the given letters.

Matthew really enjoyed the letter/sound hunt. He was very excited to identify an object and then say the sound and letter that corresponded with the initial sound of the object.
Calendar skills were introduced today. We went over the days of the week. Richard put numbers 1-17 in the correct place on a wall calendar. He enjoyed searching a 100 chart looking for the number stated. An abacus was used to match beads with the corresponding number. Richard enjoyed using manipulatives to complete a given pattern.

Richard completed a page in his 'All About Me' book about his favorite things at home and school. He enjoyed a letter-sound hunt which involved going around the school finding objects that started with given sounds. Richard did well determining the initial sound of given pictures. We began blending 3 letter words with a short a in the middle. The difference between sight words and words that can be decoded by blending was discussed. Richard will keep a box and a book of sight words he learns throughout the year. Today, he was introduced to the word 'the'. He practiced writing the word 'the' and finding the word in a story. He enjoyed listening to a book and did well making predictions and answering questions about the text.

Richard completed a page in his 'All About Me' book entitled, 'How Do I Get to School'. We talked about different types of transportation and when one might use each. Richard did well on a visual discrimination activity in which he was tasked with finding the picture with a subtle difference. He worked on a variety of activities that involved the /j/ sound. He also did well on a cut and paste categorization activity. Richard enjoyed listening to the book, 'Are You My Mother'. He was animated in predicting what would happen next and in talking (with emotion) like he thought the main character would react. He drew a picture of himself with his mother and dictated a description of his mother. Richard continues to practice the numbers 1 and 2. Manipulatives were used to work on the concepts of more and less. Additionally, Richard confidently and correctly completed a cut and paste activity involving completing picture sequences.

Richard enjoyed an outside game in which he needed to state the name and sound of a given letter. Visual discrimination and following oral directions were practiced with a coloring activity where he had to listen to what color he needed to use on what part of the various children illustrated in the picture. He confidently and correctly completed a cut and paste, categorization activity. Richard practiced using the correct pencil grip and writing the numbers 1 and 2. We will continue to work on forming the number 2. He also enjoyed a game of number bingo. Additionally, Richard completed another page of his 'All About Me' book. He drew a picture of his favorite animal and then dictated the process by which he would help animals become stronger and faster if he was a scientist. Richard was focused and cooperative.

Richard can identify and read numbers 0-9. He named the name and sound of all letters correctly with the exception of the sounds of D and J. He really enjoyed talking about becoming a scientist and helping animals.

Richard seemed to enjoy telling me about himself. He engaged easily and did well attending to tasks. He completed the first two pages of a book he will complete entitled 'All About Me'. He drew a picture of himself and his favorite sport. Richard listened to the story, 'My Nest is Best'. He confidently predicted what would happen next and did well answering questions about the story. He enjoyed creating a nest for three birds out of a paper plate, feathers, paper and sequins. He practiced fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination by cutting with scissors and by tracing non-straight lines from pictures of birds to their nests. Richard was asked to name letters and numbers. He was tasked with writing the letters of the alphabet and writing the numbers 1-10. Throughout the year, we will work on pencil grip and the correct formation of letters and numbers. He enjoyed counting bear manipulatives and categorizing them by size and color. Given numbers 1-12, Richard confidently placed the numbers in the correct order. He did well following one step directions that involved physicality. Richard enjoyed a brief trip to the playground.

Richard arrived about 15 minutes late. He is a friendly, cooperative little boy who was a joy to teach. His handwriting shows some fine motor difficulty and some reversals. He was attentive, worked independently when appropriate and asked for help when needed.
Begin this class with some Martial Arts training... Look around the yard for various insects: butterflies, grasshoppers, lizards. We also climbed a tree to look.
We caught a lizard and put him in a jar, for observation.
Assignment
Take care of the lizard.
