We learned that plant and animal coverings provide protection from: predators, disease, injury, and drying out. Then we learned that fur keeps mammals warm such as lions, monkeys, rabbits, and dogs. Feathers keep birds warm and water out. They also help birds fly. Scales protect fish and allow a gliding side to side swimming motion. Shells provide protection from predators for turtles, armadillos, clams, and snails. Next we learned about plants protective coverings. They have a waxy coating to keep them from drying out when it’s very hot. A cactus has sharp spines for protection from predators.

Time for Kids and summary, opinion piece revision, and spelling pretest
Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn and I began her session reading Time for Kids together. She practiced the skill of the 5 finger retell for two of the articles. This really helps her to reflect and focus on comprehension. She went back to the articles to figure out what she had missed. She revised and edited her opinion piece and took a spelling pretest.
Today Gwendolyn began our session with a spelling quiz. She received a 100 percent. Way to go, Gwendolyn! These words were challenging and this was an excellent improvement from her pretest. When she was finished, she went to the computer and typed up her opinion paper. Tomorrow she will work on additional revisions.
Gwendolyn and I continued reading in two texts about World War II. We discussed the draft, the Tuskegee airmen, the Holocaust and Japanese internment camps. We noted new vocabulary. We watched a short video on History.com about D-Day, the Normandy invasion. We compared the number of casualties between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the atomic bombs in Japan. We learned about Pearl Harbor on BrainPop.
Today Gwendolyn walk/ran 3x around the playground. She is continuing to work on ultimately running the entire way.
Gwendolyn also practiced trapping and kicking the soccer ball and we ended the session with stretching her back, hamstrings etc. She used the yoga ball with some of her stretches. Next class she wants to continue with running, ballplay and volleyball.
Gwendolyn did a pre writing activity today on her "bucket list". We discussed a bucket list and how it's a wish list of things you want to do. It can be places you want to visit or things you want to see or do. She had a paper with a picture of a bucket on it and had to fill it in with her list. She chose things like go to the super bowl, meet a famous athlete, go to the Stanley Cup, go to the Grand Canyon, and go to Africa. After she wrote her ideas in her bucket, she colored her bucket and put a star by her top five ideas. She chose one idea and did a free writing activity on why she wanted to do it.
Gwendolyn began her lesson with some warm-up arpeggio c major scales. She then did several enrichment pages as review on Notes and Rests, The Scale, and The Staff. She then began sight-reading through "Marriage of Figaro", by Mozart.
We learned about the integumentary system which is made up of toenails, fingernails, hair, and the largest organ in the body, the skin. We learned that blood vessels near the surface of the skin help cool your blood and that hair helps keep your head warm. Some of the functions of skin are to protect from germs and keep water inside. We learned that friction ridges are the circles on your fingertips which are more sensitive to touch then other places on your body. Next we learned that the epidermis is the outer skin and dermis is the inner skin layer that contains hair follicles, sweat glands, blood vessels, and nerve endings.
