Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn began our session with a quick spelling review. When she was finished, she completed her vocabulary unit 10. The final page in the unit reviewed the vocabulary words from her list that were emotion words. She had to compose sentences using the words correctly. Then she worked on a creative writing piece about the latest creative inventions she has come up with. The pictures and descriptions of them will go into her creative writing journal.
Gwendolyn and I began our class today by reviewing. We read a news article from AP about the nuclear weapons currently being tested in North Korea. We continued in two textbooks, learning about the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement. We also discussed the Korean War and the Vietnam War. We reviewed the policy of containment and the Truman Doctrine. We read about Brown vs. The Board of Education, discussing the concept of "separate but equal", Thurgood Marshall, segregation, The Civil Rights Act, and integration. We learned about the Civil Rights Movement with a BrainPop video. We also looked to a short video about the Vietnam War on History.com. We learned about Rosa Parks and Nixon. Finally, we began a new unit on modern news and events and watched a video about terrorism. Tomorrow we will discuss September 11th.
We played some soccer and then did a quick strength circuit. We finished our time with reading about the importance of sleep in the book we are reading together.
Gwendolyn made a beautiful batch of Chocolate Chip Scones with a Vanilla Glaze today. She mixed together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl until it was thoroughly combined. Next, she added the butter and worked it in until the mixture was crumbly. For the final step she added the heavy whipping cream, vanilla and chocolate chips. We transferred the sticky dough to a floured rolling mat and kneaded the dough. Gwendolyn then made the dough into a round 6” circle. We then cut the dough and baked it for 16 minutes. While the scones baked we mixed up a simple Vanilla glaze and drizzled it onto the scones once they had cooled.
Gwendolyn's lesson today was to consist of enrichment on '"Tones and Pauses", and "Musical Notations." She then would have warmed-up with some arpeggio work, and then practiced her current pieces of Marriage and Figaro and Clarinet Concerto.
