I'm Thinking Discussions, Pre-Assessments & Word Ladders
Lesson Outline
Today I observed Maya for 30 minutes with Lynne. She gave me a lot of excellent suggestions for working with Maya.

Maya and I came back to her room and used the balloon to do "I'm thinking..." categorizations and conversations. From there we played the game with word families, thinking about words that rhyme. Then we went to the white board and created a word ladder with the -ab ending. Maya seemed to enjoy this.

Maya read the next 41 Dolch Sight Words (1st Grade) with 100% accuracy.

I completed the last running record J with Maya. I will instruct her with level J and K texts.

I feel like have gathered enough pre-assessment data to begin more formal instruction. I look forward to working with Maya on reading, word work and writing. Most of our writing will begin with response to texts read together or picture prompts.

Today Maya practiced her 8X table facts. She continued to work on division meanings, in Topic 7. Maya used manipulatives in order to see how some items can not be divided equally. She was able to group objects and solve division problems and express the value of the remainder. Maya also practiced solving multi-step multiplication problems in preparation of tomorrow's test. Maya reviewed a sentence by sentence actiivty today in her LB program. She was able to supply a thorough description of the story through the use of her structure cards. Maya continued in her FF program.

George Washington
Lesson Outline
Maya learned about George Washington and Mount Vernon. First we created a KWL chart to determine what Maya already knew about George Washington and what she wanted to learn. We utilized several children's books, BrainPop Junior, and the internet to research and read about the topics. She chose to create a panoramic drawing of Mount Vernon complete with a barn and animals. We completed a Venn Diagram as well outlining the activities that Maya and George have in common.

Pre-assessment/Baseline Data
Lesson Outline
Today Maya and I continued with pre-assessment. I administered a running record on level I. She did wonderfully. She felt too tired to continue with the J, so I will assess her on J tomorrow.

To assess her basic understanding long and short vowels I read her list of words. For each long vowel word Maya heard, she stretched her body long. For each short vowel word she crouched down (to be short). Based on this assessment, Maya does not have a clear understanding of long and short vowel sounds, so we will begin working on vowel sounds and their spellings in the future,.

I also her assessed her on the first 92 Dolch Sight Words. She passed with 100% accuracy. Tomorrow I will continue with the next sets of words.

Maya and I had lengthy discussion about books. We worked together to organize and categorize the books in her room. Maya showed an excellent understanding of realism and fantasy and subject area.

We read "I Love You Forever" and added "Forever and always my teacher/student you'll be".

Tomorrow we will choose a chapter book or picture book to begin in class.

I noticed Maya loves to be read to, but doesn't enjoy reading as much. She showed little stamina for reading. What should my expectation be? How much should I encourage her versus letting her stop?

Maya did a great job in math today. She performed an 8X table drill and did very well, especially for just beginning yesterday. Maya reviewed her homework from the night before to ensure a better understanding of multi-step problems. She was introduced to division today and understands that division can be thought of as "sharing". Maya used manipulatives in order to demonstrate various division problems. Maya will continue to practice this skill. Maya understands that learning her multiplication facts well will assist her in solving division problems more easily. She practiced using multiplication facts and the commutative property to solve simple division problems. Maya continued in her FF program. She was very focused and came close to her high score, today.
