As Ashley was the only one present, I allowed her to read ahead in the Great Gatsby. We discussed soem of the broader social themes and delved a little into how the narrator (Nick) reveals Gatsby to us but I saved the lesson I had planned until a day when at least 2 students are present.
Students turned in their paper portfolio. I made a point of praising them for following directions to a "T". I asked them how they felt at the end of that long paper-wrting process. They felt good and I think they felt proud.
Historical intro to gReat Gatsby: WWI, roaring 20's, stock market crash of 1929.
We read the first 8 pages out loud together in class. I told them to pay attention the the word HOPE in the book and to imagery about the color yellow/gold.

discuss what to do when right at the end it "seems all wrong". Show students how to salvage what you've done without throwing it all out. We used Sadie's paper as the example as she was feeling lost. Show students how to pretend to be an outside reader of your own paper. WRite topic and main point of each paragraph in margin? Most issues can be resolved by strengthening intro paragraph and first sentence of each paragraph.
