Ben spent almost half of our class time in the bathroom. He also spent a good some of our time trying to avoid doing anything he felt was difficult. I took a bit of an authoritative posture with him, and he finally started trying. He did have a difficult time with finger control and coordination, especially with his left hand, and when trying to combine hands, which frustrated him a good deal. I just encouraged him to keep trying. We probably had 20 minutes of productive class time.

Cannot state enough how disappointed I was that Max was not continuing. He was looking forward to the Blues Scale. I was looking forward to teaching him how to read music. From yesterday's assessment, it was apparent that he did not know how to read music.

Assessment and Introduction
Lesson Outline
Max was asked a series of questions regarding his knowledge of music. He was also asked to play anything to assess the level of dexterity and range of note and rhythm values.

After it was assessed that his knowledge was very limited we began from the most basic fundamentals. He picked up the most basic fundamentals very easily. I asked him to play the scale and gave him an example of the difference between major and non-major tonal modes.

At the end of the lesson he was given a preview of his next lesson - The Blues Scale.

Max was an absolute pleasure to teach. His manners and demeanor were lovely.

Lesson Outline
Macy was so impressed by the minor chords that she only wanted to play chords. I allowed her to play several chords in modified arpeggio form. Macy then wanted to compose. I always encourage students to compose by allowing them to show me what interests them. I gave her some guidelines, i.e., the I, IV, and V chord progression. We also reviewed the Spanish chord progression, and the minor (i, iv, and V) chord progression. We reviewed the Pentatonic scale and I demonstrated the different countries that use that scale (China, Japan, Scotland and the music of the Andes Mt.) . She did receive more checks on "The Chart". We finished by going back to the music book where she played a few more songs. We decided not to master them so that we could cover more territory. Every easy piece introduces something new and I felt that it was best to expose her to each new concept. Interesting enough, when I tried to review the Intervals - she was the first student who had mastered all 13 in one lesson - she was only interested in her favorite, m2 or Jaws. At times when you have made such an intense effort to master something, the memory of that intense effort keeps you from wanting to go back. If we had had more lessons we would have eased into the intervals.

Macy was an extraordinary student. She picked up on so many things easily. It was a joy to meet her sense of curiosity regarding music. I hope she continues her lessons.

Lesson Comments
Macy was one of the most fascinating students I've ever had. She picked up concepts quickly, her "been there, done that" attitude fed her curiosity and led us to many areas of theory. Thoroughly enjoyed our lessons. Hope she continues wherever she goes.
